Site Description

All Souls is a congregation located in Southeastern CT in New London, a small shoreline city (pop. 25,000). There are 240 members and 75 children and youth. Most importantly, we are averaging 205 attendees on at worship, the glowing center of our shared life. All Souls mission is to "create a welcoming, caring, justice seeking community within and beyond our walls." The mission is taken very seriously. We are on the brink of a capital campaign having just sold our historic building. As well, we are engaged in Small Group Ministry; leading community-wide conversations about race and racism; and have recently re-vamped our path to membership series to reflect changing attitudes toward membership. Our staff and lay leadership are strong and enthusiastic.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

Whatever areas the student needs and desires to investigate. Obviously, involvement in worship is important. The current field ed student preached once a month and took on other elements of the liturgy as well. As the UUA requires experience in a wide range of areas, we encourage a broad sampling of participation and leadership.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

All Souls is now completing our first experience as a Teaching Parish. Commitment is running high! The congregation understands that to be an excellent teaching parish, congregants must foremost show up. There was high attendance on Sundays when the field ed student was preaching. Many congregants participated in the Adult RE class that was student-led. We have an annual offering to financially support this mission. The Teaching Parish Committee was also excellent and are now among our most important advocates for serving as a Teaching Parish. Personally, I have loved serving as a supervisor. It is a role and contribution I've looked forward to fulfilling. That the first experience was as positive as it was, has deepened the commitment to and enthusiasm for serving as a teaching parish.

Special Considerations

New London is a transportation hub. The train station is within walking distance from the church. The building is completely accessible.

Comments

For Field Ed, yes. By ANTS' standards, yes. And I'll have to check with the UUA & ANTS about internship stipend expectations.
