Andover Newton's Campus Changes Hands
Well-regarded foundation to use Newton campus for educational purposes

Today (6.29.17), Andover Newton Theological School took the final steps toward selling its Newton Center campus to a well-regarded foundation that intends to use the site for educational purposes.

In 2017-18, Andover Newton will rent the Franklin Trask Library building, located on the northern end of the Andover Newton quadrangle, from the campus’ buyer. All teaching will take place in Trask, while that facility continues to serve as the Andover Newton library. The buyer has extended the invitation to students to remain in their dormitory spaces and has hired six Andover Newton staff persons to continue to manage the campus’ physical plant.

Martin B. Copenhaver, President, notes that the School’s administration and trustees made valiant attempts over three decades to remain on its current campus. When faced with the reality that the School needed to choose between maintaining the campus and carrying on the School’s core mission to educate clergy, the choice became clear.

Sarah Drummond, Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs, states, “We love and will miss our Newton campus, but we look forward to a year when the whole Andover Newton community in Newton is under one roof. We also look forward to a bright and long future.” Andover Newton plans to relocate to New Haven, Connecticut, and is moving forward toward its plans to form an affiliation with Yale Divinity School.

The School will hold a celebration of its time on the Newton site on May 11, 2018, in the afternoon. That event will include opportunities to give thanks for and share memories of the School’s history in its Newton location.
