Dr. David Gordis
President, Hebrew College

Dear David:

I write in anticipation of the annual commemoration of Yom Ha Shoah to
express the thoughts and prayers of our entire community.

At Andover Newton we will be doing two things to remember Yom Ha Shoah.
First, we will have a delegation of students, faculty and staff who will
attend your program on the 25th. Second, we will have our own chapel
service here on the following day at 1:00PM.

As eager as we are to demonstrate our strong support for the
remembrances within the Jewish community, we are obligated not to
confuse that solidarity with the related but different dynamic each
Christian must face on that day. Sincere reflection on our
responsibility in the face of holocaust is one that demands much of us.
That's why our weekly chapel service on the 26th will once again be
dedicated to Yom Ha Shoah. It is something we must do. We would welcome
visitors from your community to our service, if anyone would feel
comfortable attending, but, regardless, we want you to know that it is
taking place.

For my part, I will fast that day and burn a candle in my office
window.

In the midst of Passover and Easter, we are mindful that there are many
holidays that are important to each of our faiths. In our more honest
moments we acknowledge that we may not be aware of, fully understand, or
feel compelled by one another's celebrations. But for this day, we at
Andover Newton want no one to mistake our awareness, understanding or
our compulsion on this subject.

We remember too.

Fondly,

Nick Carter
