Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Advisory
-------------------------------------------------

Dear Members of the Community,

One of our students has been exposed to an outbreak of pertussis, or
Whooping Cough, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH. She
doesn't believe she's contracted it, but the incubation period is 21
days and it's likely that she's at least been exposed to it. As a
safety precaution we want you to be aware of this possibility.

Comprehensive information on pertussis may be found at the DHMC web site
at:

http://www.dhmc.org/webpage.cfm?site_id=2&org_id=2&gsec_id=0&sec_id=0&item_id=38710

It also important to realize that the principal reason for concern is to
protect infants age 6-12 months or
less who are at risk of serious disease from pertussis. For adults
pertussis is a contagious respiratory illness, characterized by
prolonged cough, but with very rare exceptions it is not a serious
illness. Many adults get pertussis each winter without realizing what
they have and the cough eventually goes away on its own. According to
the DHMC, antibiotic treatment may help resolve symptoms in some cases
and it will certainly
make you less likely to transmit the infection to others.

So this is a general advisory notice for your awareness. At this time
we are not recommending that members of the community take any
particular precautions.

Thank you,

Nancy Nienhuis
Dean of Students and Community Life

Introducing ANTS Connect
-----------------------------------
ANTS Connect is our new internet campus portal system that acts as a
digital 'commons' for our campus, offering a powerful resource to
connect students, faculty, and staff with our school's databases.

ANTS Connect offers everyone on campus a single point of access to
Web-based self-service, e-learning, communications, and
community-building applications.

With one login and password, students, faculty and staff can have 24x7
access to perform tasks that enhance their relationship with the school.

We will first use ANTS Connect for e-learning courses in June (Summer
2006). In the Fall, ANTS Connect will host all online course areas and
community groups.

Future features of ANTS Connect will include online registration and
bill payment.

-----------------------------------
Your ANTS Connect Username and Password
-----------------------------------
All students will receive an e-mail or letter containing their new
username and password for ANTS Connect between August 25-30, 2006.

The e-mail will be sent to your ANTS.EDU e-mail address.

-----------------------------------
ANTS Connect and E-Learning
-----------------------------------
A Learning Management System, with capabilities similar to Blackboard,
is fully integrated into ANTS Connect. Course areas are created
automatically from our CX database records, and all students are
automatically enrolled in their course areas when they register for a
course. You need only log in to access your course area.

Each online course can contain course documents, announcements, web
links, syllabi, threaded discussions, and real-time chat. You can view
and download course documents and syllabi, engage in class discussions,
and send e-mail to other class members from any computer with Internet
access.

------------------------------------
Summer E-Learning Courses to Use ANTS Connect
------------------------------------
We will be using our new ANTS Connect internet portal for our summer
e-learning courses.

If you are taking a summer e-learning course, You will receive an e-mail
or letter by May 15, or sooner, with your new username and password and
instructions for how to log in to your E-learning class.

If you have questions, please contact please contact Karen Brockney at
kbrockney@ants.edu or 617-964-1100 ext. 225.

-----------------------------------
Blackboard Going Away - June 30
-----------------------------------
Beginning with this summer's e-learning classes, we are moving to a new
learning system for online classes. The new system is integrated into
our campus internet portal, ANTS Connect.

The new system provides much of the same features as Blackboard,
including discussion boards and class rosters and email. It is very
flexible and should provide an excellent learning environment.

Once our contract with Blackboard expires, however, you will not be able
to access old courses. This means that if you have any material from
previous courses that you want to retain and that is not located
elsewhere you will need to move it from Blackboard to your own computer.
The easiest way to do this is to use the Control/C and Control/V
functions to cut and paste the material into your own word processing
system.

If you run in problems with this, please contact Karen Brockney at
kbrockney@ants.edu or 617-964-1100 ext. 225
