Creating Healing Connections in Faith Communities - March 21, 2007
-------------------------------------------------
A Day on the Hill
Wednesday March 21, 2007
9:00 -3:15
Peck Conference Room
Worcester Hall

A health and healing ministry was an integral part of the early Christian church. Wholistic care was a prevalent practice. Over the centuries with the explosion of medical and scientific knowledge, faith communities deferred to the medical profession as being the more qualified to address issues related to physical and mental health. Faith communities reserved spiritual care as their domain. Within recent decades, both medicine and faith communities have come to realize the benefits of a mutual partnership with integrated care. This alliance yields better results in healing and in the prevention of disease.

Come and join us to find out how your faith community can strengthen the healing connections in your health ministry.

Cost for the day, including lunch is $35. Fee for students is $25. Register with Jennifer Shaw at jshaw@ants.edu or call 617 964 1100 ext. 228. Mail checks payable to ANTS to Jennifer Shaw, Andover Newton Theological School, 210 Herrick Rd, Newton Centre, MA 02459

Staff Transitions
---------------------

Good people:

It is with regret that I announce two of our staff members are readying to leave Andover Newton.

Effective March 9, Desne Crossley will be leaving ANTS to become the Associate Director of Major Gifts at Simmons College. Desne has worked here leading our Institutional Advancement Team for more than two years and brought a faith-filled enthusiasm to her work every day. She is excited about the new position at Simmons and what it offers at this moment in her life. We are all grateful for the time she shared with us. A farewell party will be held for Desne on Wednesday March 7 at 3PM in the Peck Room.

Effective May 31, Karen Brockney will be retiring from her position as Director of E Communications at ANTS. Karen has made a significant mark here in both her innovative leadership of our website and in her tireless work with the school's comprehensive database. We have learned to depend on Karen and her gentle style of enabling us to enter the worlds of technology. She will not be easy to replace. As much as she loves ANTS, Karen and her husband are looking forward eagerly to a time of extended travel and relaxation as they move into the long-anticipated retirement chapter of their lives. We will share more plans about saying farewell to Karen in about 6 weeks.

Andover Newton has been blessed with a remarkable level of stability in its faculty and staff through the years. This says a great deal about the level of dedication and hard work we enjoy here. It also makes it hard for us when natural life transitions occur. Jealously, we want to hang on to our colleagues for as long as we can. Yet, while we cannot know who or when, we know that some changes are inevitable. Thus, our challenge in the face of change is to model our deeply held values of gratitude for what each of these people have brought us, offer them our prayers and good wishes, and say good bye in a spirit of joy for what lies ahead for them.

Holy Play: A New Book By Kirk Byron Jones
-----------------------------------------------
Jossey-Bass, an imprint of Wiley, has recently published Holy Play: The Joyful Adventure of Unleashing Your Divine Purpose by Kirk Byron Jones.

The book, Jones' seventh in as many years, has been hailed by Publishers Weekly as "an engaging counterweight to the popular idea that God has predetermined a unique, singular purpose for each human life."

At the heart of Holy Play is Jones' contention that "purpose is not something we passively receive from God, but something we actively co-create with God." Jones offers the following 5 steps for joyfully playing your purpose:

1. Believe that God is your divine partner, not your domineering parent.
2. Believe that vocation is an open possibility, not a closed proposition.
3. Accept that you are not just creature but creator as well.
4. Dream your way to purpose.
5. Joyfully play your dreams.

To read a book excerpt and learn about a special free gift for purchasing Holy Play by May 31, 2007, visit www.holyplay.com.
