School Closing for Construction Issues - July 28 - NO ELECTRICAL SERVICE
------------------------------------------
Good people:

This Friday (July 28th) we will be closing the school all day for some major electrical and plumbing work necessitated by the construction of the Wilson Chapel.

On both days the electrical service for almost the entire campus will be shut off. The duration of the work will be from 8:00AM until 4:00PM. There is an outside chance the work will not take the entire time, but you shouldn't count on it. While we are doing all this we decided to take advantage of the moment and do some of the pending plumbing work, which will require that we shut down water service to the campus from about 10AM to 2PM on the 28th.

Given the scope of this, it only made sense to close the school. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but this couldn't be avoided. BTW - Colby, Herrick Cricle, and Hebrew College will not be affected.

A word to the wise: It might be smart to unplug any devices that are susceptible to power surges (computers, TV's, answering machines, etc) if you don't have a surge protector. Refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, etc are fine - particularly as you will want your fridge to come back on as soon as the power returns.

In the not too distant future we will also begin some work on electric and gas lines that will require digging in the roads in front of Fuller and the upper portion of Herrick Road (Herrick House up past the back of the library).

In all these things I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
And enjoy the extra time off!

Cooling Center In Lower Noyes
------------------------------------------
Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty:

The National Weather Center has issued nationwide extreme weather
advisories as temperatures are expected to climb to 100 degrees in the
next few days. Recognizing that many residents on campus do not have air
conditioning available, the Student Association and Student Life have
arranged for Lower Noyes to be a designated Cooling Center refuge for
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. Lower Noyes will remain
open and air conditioned daily from 8:00 am - 10:00 pm. Additionally,
the SA will be providing bottled water and cold drinks free of charge.

The SA urge all residents to remain hydrated and take proper
precautions against heat-related injuries such as heat exhaustion and
heat stroke. Please feel free to use Lower Noyes as a refuge from the
heat over the next few days.

New Housing Coordinator
--------------------------------
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Amelia O'Dowd will be the
new Housing Coordinator for ANTS. Amelia comes with a great deal of
experience, most recently as the front desk agent at a small hotel in
Cambridge where she was responsible for accommodating some of the guests
of Harvard's Commencement ceremonies, among other duties. We are very
eager to have her join us! Amelia's formal starting date is July 31,
but she will come in on two Fridays, July 14 and 21, to begin to
familiarize herself with ANTS. I know you will join me in offering
Amelia a warm welcome to the ANTS community.

Faith Youth Institute and Safe Church Guidelines
-----------------------------------------
Thank you for welcoming the teens and staff of Andover Newton's Faith
Youth Institute to campus between July 8 and 16. To assure your own
safety and the safety of all program participants, we kindly ask that
you observe the following Safe Church Guidelines during the FYI week
between July 8-16.

As regards the "two adult" rule in Safe Church guidelines, please avoid
situations in which one adult is left alone with one youth in private
spaces. This concern does not apply when two youth are present with an
adult (whether FYI staff or not) in public spaces or dormitories.

Otherwise, other Safe Church Guidelines include: not inviting youth
into rooms or private spaces; not offering ministry or pastoral care to
students unless designated staff; not allowing youth in your cars; not
engaging in sexual activity or email correspondence with youth; and,
reporting any suspicious behavior (to the numbers listed below). Thank
you to everyone in the ANTS community for making this FYI week an
amazing experience!!

The list of FYI Staff for 2006 is included below, along with cell phone
numbers. If there are any concerns which arise over the course of the
week with regard to FYI, please contact the FYI office at (800)964-2687

UPDATED: Good News on Air Conditioning
----------------------------------------------------
Dear ANTS Summer Residents,

Good News!

We have negotiated an arrangement with Lincoln Air Conditioning to
provide air conditioning in the residence halls. From now on all
residents in Appleton-Chase, Fuller, and Herrick House will be able to
have air conditioning for the full season (or year-round if you wish).
In Fuller and Herrick you may have more than one unit/apartment if you
wish. You will be able to contract for services directly with Lincoln.
They will rent you an air conditioner, install it, and remove it at the
end of September, all for one fee (see below). They use high energy
efficient air conditioners, so the annual cost of running them is very
low. Unfortunately, due to wiring constraints we cannot allow air
conditioners in Farwell, and Kendall units are granted on a per request
basis only, through my office.

Every resident in Appleton Chase, Fuller, or Herrick who rents an AC
unit will be charged a $50/unit electric surcharge for the season. If,
due to allergies or whatever you elect to keep the unit installed
throughout the year for occasional use as needed, a second surcharge of
$50/unit will be billed to your student account. No one will be
allowed to install their own unit. We are doing this because improperly
installed units have resulted in ruined window sills and electrical
problems.

Since some of you already received medical clearance from me to install
AC units, you will be allowed to continue to use them for this year.
If you have already installed your own air conditioner, you will be
billed $75 for the season, and an additional $75 for the full year if
you want it year-round, unless you have documentation showing that the
unit you installed is an Energy Star, highly efficient unit. In that
case the fee would drop down to $50 per billing.

Fees and Details:
The fees are based on the difficulty of installation. These fees are
annual fees (there is no difference if you elect to keep it just for
the summer season, i.e. you install the AC unit May 1 and have it
removed end of September). A 5% sales tax is added to the total, which
is due upon installation.

Appleton Chase: $225/unit
Fuller: $140/unit for 6,000 BTU, $185 for 8,000 BTU
Herrick House: $210/unit for the small front windows, $140/unit for the
double hung windows (6,000 BTU. 8,000 BTU is $185.

Contact Information:
Lincoln Air Conditioning, 1-800-439-1780

Process:
1) Call Lincoln and arrange to have an AC unit installed. They will
give you a date of installation (if they have several requests they'll
install them within 1-2 days. If they have 1 request they may wait
until they get another couple before they come out).
2) Arrange to let them into the building and your room. If you cannot
be there due to work or whatever, arrange to leave the keys with
Jennifer Shaw, Interim Housing Coordinator, so they can get into your
room.
3) You leave a check on the window sill in which you want the AC unit
installed. They install it and leave you a receipt on the AC unit.
4) If you have any problems with the units you contact Lincoln
directly.

Lincoln has decades of experience renting AC units, and they serve
Harvard, Mit, and other local schools. I think you will find them
efficient and professional.

I am pleased to offer this service to you, and hope it makes living at
ANTS during the summer much more comfortable!

Take care,

Nancy

Food Pantry
---------------------------------
Dear Community Members,

As you know we keep a small food pantry in Sturtevant Hall (on the left
as you enter the student lounge area). This can be very helpful to
many of our students, particularly during the summer months when they
don't have the meal plan. Please remember to bring items for the pantry
from time to time (non-perishable only, please), as you are able. I
know those who need this assistance appreciate it very much.

Thank you,
