CMLE 853-The Religious Leader as Servant
Prof. Jeff Jones
This on-line seminar will explore the meaning of servant leadership for
ministry in today's world. Based primarily in the writing of Robert
Greenleaf, whose personal papers are housed in the Andover Newton
library, the seminar will engage participants in an in-depth look at
the art and practice of leadership with particular reference to their
own identity and role as leaders. This is a D.Min. elective.

New "Explorations in Spiritual Formation" course
------------------------
"Explorations in Spiritual Formation" -INTE684 Mary Luti and I will
be leading this 1.5 credit course, which will meet every other Thursday
afternoon from 2-4 pm for the fall. It meets on this schedule:

Pre-semester meeting: Tuesday, Sept. 2, 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Orientation meetings: (Leading groups of incoming students): Friday,
Sept. 5 from noon-2:00 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 6, from 12:30-3:30 pm.
Lunch is provided for these meetings.
Fall semester group spiritual direction meetings: 2:00-4:00 p.m. on the
following seven Thursdays: September 11 & 25, October 9 & 23, November 6
& 20, and Dec. 4.

Library Updates Access to Databases
------------------------
Over the summer we have been working on enhancements to your online
library experience. Now we have one-stop authentication for remote
access to all databases. You login just one time--no more different
passwords for different databases. Call Library Circulation Desk for
password information: 617 964-1100 ext. 251. Use of all database
products is limited to students and faculty because of license
restrictions.

On August 1 we will add a Biblical studies and worship resource,
iPreach. iPreach provides full text of several commentaries, including
New Interpreter's Bible. There are also lectionary commentaries,
theological dictionaries, and sermon aids. A trial version of iPreach is
available on the Library web site now.

Beginning with the fall semester many reserve readings will be
available as pdf files in Connect course sites, when fair use guidelines
of the copyright law permit.

In light of these additional full text resources, beginning August 1
all campus student printing will be centralized at the computer lab in
Stoddard Hall.

Student Health Insurance
------------------------
All Registered Students taking 9 or more credit hours are automatically
enrolled in the School Plan.
Massachusetts state law now requires all students not enrolling in the
student health insurance plan must bring physical proof of insurance to
the business office.
The premiums for the Student Health Insurance 2008-09 policy year (Sept
1 to Aug 31) are:

Student: $ 944.
Spouse: $3752.
Each Child $1878.

Starting this year, students enrolled in the plan may elect to cover a
domestic partner at the spousal rate.

Needed: Spiritual Formation Group Leaders!
------------------------
Dear returning Students,

Once again I will be dividing all incoming students into small
spiritual formation groups. Students who have led these groups in the
past have found it very rewarding, and excellent preparation for
ministry. And, these groups have meant a great deal to incoming
students. One such student described his/her group in this way, "It was
a time of feeling a part, caring for others and knowing they cared about
you. It was good to have people who were more advanced in their studies
as well as those who were trying to figure it all out as I was. We
formed such a unit that you know if you needed someone or special
prayer, it was available." This makes such a difference in the lives of
new students, please consider this ministry.

If you are interested in being a small group leader you need to
register for "Explorations in Spiritual Formation" (INTE684 (GR07) 01).
Incoming Professor and Director of the Wilson Chapel Mary Luti and I
will be leading this 1.5 credit course, which will meet every other
Thursday afternoon for 2 hours for the fall. If you took the course
last year and wish to be a leader again, please register to "audit" the
course.

Kerri Saucier

It is with great personal regret that I tell you that Kerri Saucier
will be leaving Andover Newton and moving to the western part of the
state at the end of July. Kerri has been an invaluable member of the
Advancement team, and has patiently supported the needs of other offices
as well. We will miss her sorely here in Institutional Advancement. I'm
sure we won't even know how much she does until she stops doing it!
Andover Newton's loss will be Smith College's gain, however, and we
sincerely wish Kerri and Cooper well in their new adventure. Stay tuned
for a goodbye party the last week in July!

Loss of Edith Ingraham (Crary) Howe
------------------------
It is with a great amount of regret that the Andover Newton community
has lost a true prophet. Please look to Enews for further information
regarding a memorial service for Edie this fall in which both Hebrew
College and Andover Newton will organize.

A wonderful mother, sister, friend and inspiration to many, passed away
peacefully on Sunday, July 6th, 2008 at her home in Cambridge, MA from
breast cancer. She was 61 years old. Edie received her B.A. at Simmons
College, her Ed.M. at Boston University and her J.D. from Northeastern
University School of Law in 1983. She served as General Counsel in the
Executive Office of Human Services in the Dukakis administration, and
was a trust and estate attorney at Palmer & Dodge LLP. After many years
as a lawyer, Edie enrolled in theological studies where her passion for
interfaith dialogue helped spark joint initiatives between seminary and
rabbinical students at Andover Newton Theological School and Hebrew
College.

After the events of 9/11 Edie felt called to do something to mitigate
the misunderstanding and fear between Jews, Christians, and Muslims.
This prompted her to form a woman's interfaith book group called the
Daughters of Abraham, which has now become a national movement with
groups all over the country. Edie was also a trustee of the American
University in Cairo, and a board member and former co-chair for
Massachusetts Advocate for Children.

Edie is survived and greatly missed by her father, Miner D. Crary, Jr.
of Northport, NY; her husband, Edward H. Howe, from whom she was
separated; her brothers, James G. Crary of Phoenix, AZ, and Miner A.
Crary of Sudbury, MA and her sisters, Laura M. Crary of Newton, MA and
Harriet S. Crary of Cambridge, MA; her children, Christopher H. Howe of
Somerville, MA, Jamen Howe Jones of San Francisco, CA, Joel Peace Howe
of Cambridge, MA; her sisters-in-law, Helen H. Crary and Janelle
Rossignol Crary; brother-in-law Douglas T. Hall; her daughter-in-law,
Jennifer Howe Peace and son-in-law, Roderick B. Jones; her nieces, Anna
C. Crary, Elissa H. Crary, Emma C. Crary, Mary Lauran C. Hall, and
nephew, Cameron Crary; and the six grandchildren who brought such joy to
her life, Alex, Jim, Ezra, Elijah, Harriet and Huxley.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: the Daughters of Abraham
through the First Church in Cambridge, Congregational, 11 Garden St.,
Cambridge 02138, memo line: Daughters of Abraham; or to the Andover
Newton Interfaith Fund at the Andover Newton Theological School,
Attention Priscilla Deck, 210 Herrick Road, Newton, MA 02459. Plans are
being made for a service at Andover Newton Theological School in the
fall, to honor her life and work.

The American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts are holding their annual
Mid-Summer Festival this year on July 25-27. The festival is held at
OCEANWOOD, located in Ocean Park, in the town of Old Orchard Beach,
Maine.

All are welcome to come for fun & food. All fundraising proceeds are
used as support for camperships, resources, and operations.

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Frank Novo has joined the Dean of
Students' team as the new Director of Housing and Facilities. Frank is
a graduate of Boston College and also holds a Master's degree from
George Washington University's School of Business and Public Management.
Frank brings extensive experience in the corporate world both in
customer service and project management. Frank comes to us from
Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc., a non-profit where he
helped plan and schedule seminars and other events for attorneys in the
greater Boston area and beyond. Frank is fluent in Spanish and
Portuguese, and lives with his partner Kevin in West Roxbury. Please
join me in welcoming Frank to our community.

"Breath Project" Update!!

Thanks to all 19 of you who have participated so far in the Breath
Project. The hope is to have at least 50 participants.

So, if you have not yet participated please come by Studio #34,
Sturtevant Hall on Mondays 10am - 3pm or Tuesdays 6pm-8pm. I am also
available to make appointments. The breath recordings take no more than
5 min. So bring your breath!! The recordings will be used for a sound
installation on campus in the fall. For questions and comments please

available, both on the ANTS Web site and on Connect. Over the past few
days, while the Web site was being updated, there was a short period of
time when both the old and new courses were listed together. This
problem has since been fixed, but please take a moment to review the
courses on the Web if you studied the catalog during the early part of
the week. We hope that this has caused no confusion, and thank you for

Serve New England
------------------------
I am going to be starting a chapter of Serve New England (
www.servenewengland.org ) here at ANTS and am looking for volunteers
to help in the running of this chapter. The program is designed to
promote volunteer service by offering deep discounts on the highest
quality grocery, meat, and vegetable items to community-minded
individuals willing to volunteer 2 hours of their time each month to a
worthy cause. Volunteers would help to take and distribute orders.
Distribution takes place one Saturday each month. If you're interested
in helping or would like more information, please contact me at

NOTICE OF FUEL SURCHARGE
------------------------
Due to the ever increasing energy cost and the adverse impact these
costs have to the financial well being of Andover Newton Theological
School, we are forced to implement a fuel surcharge effective July 1,
2008.

This fuel surcharge of $15 will be assessed in the fall and again in
the spring semesters for all students. Because we know that most
students have limited resources and any surcharge is a burden, we want
you to know that this charge only represents a fraction of the increase
in our costs.

We cannot control price increases, but we can control usage. A
continuous effort on the part of the community must be undertaken to
drive energy consumption down. We are pleased that the Board of Trustees
has committed to reduce the School's energy consumption by 20% in the
next 4 years. This goal cannot be attained, however, unless we all pitch
in. Thus, we ask for everyone's help.
We are committed to eliminate this surcharge at the earliest possible
time.

New Director of Housing and Facilities Announced!

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Frank Novo will be joining the Dean
of Students' team as the new Director of Housing and Facilities. Frank
is a graduate of Boston College and also holds a Master's degree from
George Washington University's School of Business and Public Management.
Frank brings extensive experience in the corporate world both in
customer service and project management. Frank comes to us from
Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc., a non-profit where he
helped plan and schedule seminars and other events for attorneys in the
greater Boston area and beyond. Frank is fluent in Spanish and
Portuguese, and lives with his partner Kevin in West Roxbury. Although
Frank will be on campus on Monday, July 7 to begin to get to know us, he
will formally begin his new position on Monday, July 14. Please join me
in welcoming Frank to our community.

Collective Breath Project

I need your help!!

I am an artist in residency here at Andover Newton School of Theology
and I am embarking upon an experimental project with the help of the
ANTS community. I would like to record the sound of everyone's
individual breath. I will then take the information gathered and create
a sound installation on the ANTS campus featuring the accumulated sound
of your breath!

The recording process will take no more than 10 minutes…and will be
super fun!

This summer Kurt Walker (Herrick) and Liz Miller (Appleton Chase) will
