In recognition of the fact that students have been working hard on
their current classes, we have extended Summer 2009 registration until
April 30th. There is plenty of room in all of the courses and the
offices will be open to process registrations while the students are on
their break.

The IT Department will be fine tuning the dorm internet network during
spring break. We do not yet know the date and time of this work, but
will try to make it as painless as possible.

2009-2010 Financial Aid, applications due by April 15th
------------------------
Students who will be attending Andover Newton in the Fall must reapply
for financial aid. You must complete a new FAFSA on line at
www.FAFSA.ed.gov You must also complete the Andover Newton Financial
Aid Application which is available on our website or on our Connect home
page (with other scholarship information). In order for your application
to be complete you must also submit a copy of you 2008 Federal Tax
Return. The priority date for Andover Newton aid is April 15, 2009.
Applications received after April 15th will not receive Andover Newton
aid unless additional aid becomes available.

Jonathan Edwards Society Lecture April 27th
------------------------
The annual Jonathan Edwards Lecture will be given this year by Philip
Sheldrake, the Joseph Visiting Professor of Theology at Boston College.
The lecture, entitled "Spirituality and Social Change: Rebuilding the
Human City" will be given on Monday, April 27, 2009 at 5 p.m. in Wilson
Chapel. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Part-time babysitting needed on campus by Prof. MT Davila *** New ***
------------------------
Prof. MT Davila is seeking a student or a spouse/partner of a student
to help babysit on campus in her office, beginning immediately after
Spring Break through the remainder of the semester. About 10 hours a
week are needed (Tuesdays 6-9 p.m., Thursdays 9 a.m. - 12 noon, and
other times), paying $9/hour. Experience caring for infants preferred.

Student Association Elections

Are you looking for a way to become more involved in student life at
Andover Newton, or do you want to give back to the school in some way?
Please consider becoming an officer of the Student Association. The
Executive officers provide advocacy for students, act as a liaison to
faculty, staff, and trustees,help facilitate student fellowship and
community, manage Student Association funds and so much more!

PLEASE NOTE: There is a small stipend available for SA officers. Under
our current constitution, this stipend is given to the president.
However, the current executive is proposing that the stipend be shared
among officers (this will be voted on this spring).

If you are interested in running for an office, send a brief statement
of intent and the position you are interested in running for (president,
vice-president, treasurer, secretary, student life), to sa@ants.edu.
Please submit this by Friday, April 17th.

participate. All hangable art forms welcome to celebrate Creation and
Creativity! Coffee House and/or reception in April (TBA)

How to submit art (on or before Monday, April 6)
1. Fill out an "artist's statement" form (get one from Joy or in
the front lobby of the Meetinghouse or on Connect Home page)
2. Bring no more than 3 of your best pieces (securely framed and ready
to be hung) to the Meetinghouse (follow directions in front lobby) or to
Joy.

The Rev. Richard G. Harris, American Baptist Personnel Services, will
be hosting a luncheon for all interested ABC students on Wednesday,
April 22 at noon. This is an opportunity for ABC students to talk with
him about general information about the denomination, and so forth.To

New Vice President for Finance and Operations at Andover Newton

Gentle people:

It gives me great pleasure to publicly announce that Susan Kasuba Hunt
has been hired as the new Vice President for Finance and Operations at
Andover Newton.

Susan is currently serving as the Chief Financial Officer of NELINET,
Inc. of Southboro, MA, a position she has held for the last 14 years.
NELINET is a non-profit organization that provides software services,
education and support for libraries throughout New England (yes, it has
worked with ANTS' library). Susan is a CPA and has previously worked
for 3 auditing firms, carrying responsibility for small business,
non-profit, church and religious clients. She holds a bachelors degree
(from Monmouth College (IL) with major in mathematics and a minor in
religion) and an MBA from Babson College. She has taught in the Graduate
School of Management at Simmons, as well as adjunctive teaching stints
at Emmanuel and Babson.

She will officially begin her duties here on Monday May 11th.

Carole R. Fontaine is the featured poet for Tuesday, April 7. She will
read from Only When Women Sing: Poems on Human Rights (2009).

Location: Noyes Hall Lounge

Professor Fontaine is the Taylor Professor of Biblical Theology and
History at Andover Newton, currently on sabbatical as a Henry Luce III
Fellow in Theology. She is also an internationally known feminist
scholar of the Hebrew Bible.

Passionate on the subject of global religions and the rights of women
and children, her poems have appeared in such places as the New York
Times, the journals Semeia, Anima, and Biblical Archaeology, and have
been used globally by local Amnesty International chapters, the European
Union, and many churches. Her interreligious work with Muslim feminists
continues to bring the world of ancient scriptures into dynamic
relationship with the modern concerns of international law and security
issues.

I regret to announce that Kevin Rooks lost his beloved grandfather,
Norman Rooks, yesterday morning. He will be heading home for the
funeral tomorrow and hopes to return on Tuesday of next week. He asks
that the community keep him and his family in your thoughts and
prayers.

Karen Hodges requests that you keep her in prayer. She was
hospitalized recently and continues to face some challenging medical
problems. She would appreciate your keeping her in your thoughts and
prayers.

I regret to announce that Kevin Rooks lost his beloved grandfather,
Norman Rooks, yesterday morning. He will be heading home for the

Gender and Ceremony in Blackfoot Tradition: A Symposium Featuring Carol
Murray

Friday, April 3, from 3 to 5 pm, Braun Room

The Women's Studies in Religion Program is honored to host tribal
scholar and ceremonialist Carol Murray. Murray is director of the Tribal
History Project at Blackfeet Community College in Browning, Montana,
where she served as the college's president from 1992 to 2000. Since
1980 she has been involved with the cultivation and reintroduction of
tribal religious ceremonies and the repatriation of ceremonial bundles.
Murray was born and raised on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation.

Mashpee artist Ramona Peters will offer a welcome and prayer before
Carol Murray's presentation, which will begin at 3 pm in the Braun Room.
A festive reception honoring our guest will follow the presentation. All
are welcome. Co-sponsored by the Harvard University Native American
Program.

Here is the schedule for tomorrow, March 31st:

10:00 a.m. Worship in Wilson Chapel, planned by JOTH and CIRCLE (gifts
of food accepted)
10:45 a.m. Groups convene and head to work sites
11:15-11:30 a.m. Arrival at work sites
12:30-1:30 p.m. Lunch at work sites (bring your own lunch and
beverage)
1:30-3:00 p.m. Work at sites
3:15-3:30 p.m. Groups gather and prepare to head back to campus
4:00-6:00 p.m. Campus discussion and barbecue at Hebrew College

Finally, remember that we're doing this spring day to raise funds for
the Macedonian Church of God in Christ in Springfield, which was burned
down by racist arsonists the day Pres. Obama was elected. We've raised
over $2,000 thus far! If you would like to make a contribution of any
size please leave your check, made out to the church, in the envelope on
my office door in Worcester (104).

Rev. John Fife at Boston College, March 30th
------------------------
Rev. John Fife, retired Presbyterian pastor, is speaking at BC next
Monday March 30th at 8:30 at Gasson 305. He was one of the founders of
the Sanctuary Movement where churches sheltered Salvadorans fleeing the
civil war the U.S. was in the middle of. The U.S. wouldn't allow them
refugee status. He'll speak about the No More Deaths group, which helps
migrants crossing in the desert- often in resistance to the U.S. Border
Patrol.

I stayed on his Tuscan church and a No More Deaths camp at Arrivaca
with a Christian Peacemaking Team in the summer of 2003.

It is time to sign up for Community Day! Please send me an email if
you'd like to participate (nnienhuis@ants.edu). We'll have sites on and
off campus, indoors and out, something for everyone! We already have
almost $800 in pledges for the Macedonian Church of God in Christ in
Springfield in return for our work, and I'm hoping for much more. We
are raising money to help them after their church was burned down by
racist arsonists, the day President Obama was elected. If you would
like to donate please give checks to me, payable to the church.

This year we are asking all participants to bring their own bag lunch,
so please plan accordingly. We'll begin on March 31 with worship at 10
planned by JOTH and CIRCLE, and end with a conversation over dinner.
Groups will be back on campus by 4 pm. Remember that we're going with
the Rabbinical students from Hebrew College. Do plan to join us!

Rev. John Fife at Boston College, March 30th *** New ***

Rev. John Fife, retired Presbyterian pastor, is speaking at BC next
Monday March 30th at 8:30 at Gasson 305. He was one of the founders of
the Sanctuary Movement where churches sheltered Salvadorans fleeing the
civil war the U.S. was in the middle of. The U.S. wouldn't allow them
refugee status. He'll speak about the No More Deaths group, which helps
migrants crossing in the desert- often in resistance to the U.S. Border
Patrol.

The Center for Interreligious & Communal Leadership Education (CIRCLE)
of Andover Newton Theological School and Hebrew College seeks
applications from qualified students for the Interfaith Fellowship
Program for the 2009-2010 academic year. These annual fellowships are
competitive and each fellowship carries a $10,000 stipend (which can be
applied as a tax-free tuition reimbursement).

NOTE: Please note, applications are due in to Jennifer Peace

Students who will be attending Andover Newton in the Fall must reapply
for financial aid. You must complete a new FAFSA on line at

to be complete you must also submit a copy of you 2008 Federal Tax
Return. The priority date for Andover Newton aid is April 15, 2009.

Springfield in return for our work, and I'm hoping for much more. We
are raising money to help them after their church was burned down by
racist arsonists, the day President Obama was elected. If you would

Join religiously diverse young people across Cape Cod on April 4 to
serve the needs of the homeless, learn about the root causes of
homelessness and engage in an interfaith dialog to reflect on how our
faith traditions call us to serve others and work to improve the
situation of the disenfranchised. The event will be at the Federated
Church of Hyannis Fellowship Hall, 81 Willow Ave. The morning will begin
with the hospitality breakfast from 7am-10:30am, followed by an
interfaith worship circle, and an interfaith dialog from 11am-2pm. The
interfaith dialog component will be grounded in personal faith stories,
religious texts and stories of faith heroes such as Mahatma Gandhi,
Abraham J. Heschel, Thich Nhat Hanh, Dorothy Day, Badshah Khan, and

Mount Pleasant Nursing Home Easter Sunday service, April 12th

Mount Pleasant Nursing Home needs a group of volunteers to lead an
Easter Sunday service (April 12th) from 1PM-3PM. The service is usually
45 minutes long, and extra time would be spent interacting with
residents. This service cannot happen without the help of volunteers.

gather in my home for another in the Spiritual Journeys program. This
informal program provides a fascinating window into the spiritual
formation of the School's faculty and key leaders. Rev. James Sherblom,
Co-Minister of First Parish UU, Brookline and a member of Andover Newton
Board of Trustees is this month's featured speaker.

The program lasts about an hour and is open to all members of the
Andover Newton community - students, faculty and staff. Folks usually

Retreats

Might you be interested in helping facilitate confirmation retreats for
youth through the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of
Christ? For the April 3-4 MACUCC confirmation retreat at Craigville,
the retreat is so big that we are having to split the group to do two
separate retreats. The current facilitators are hoping to get another
facilitator who plays guitar- otherwise one of the retreats will be

The Center for Interreligious & Communal Leadership Education (CIRCLE)
of Andover Newton Theological School and Hebrew College seeks
applications from qualified students for the Interfaith Fellowship
Program for the 2009-2010 academic year. These annual fellowships are
competitive and each fellowship carries a $10,000 stipend (which can be
applied as a tax-free tuition reimbursement).

almost $800 in pledges for the Macedonian Church of God in Christ in
Springfield in return for our work, and I'm hoping for much more. We
are raising money to help them after their church was burned down by
racist arsonists, the day President Obama was elected. If you would

Retreats

Christ? For the April 3-4 MACUCC confirmation retreat at Craigville,
the retreat is so big that we are having to split the group to do two
separate retreats. The current facilitators are hoping to get another
facilitator who plays guitar- otherwise one of the retreats will be
without music!

Interfaith Youth Initiative (IFYI) is seeking applications from
seminarians and graduate school mentors, and college interns for
full-time staff positions at our dynamic eight-day exploration of
peacemaking, vocation, interfaith dialogue, spirituality, service, urban
immersion, and leadership training. IFYI focuses on 5 Core Values:
Building Bridges, Training Leaders, Engaging Faith, Making Peace, and
Serving Others. IFYI is a program of Cooperative Metropolitan
Ministries, in partnership with Episcopal Divinity School and Harvard
Pluralism Project.

IFYI is scheduled for July 12-19, 2009 on the Theme: "Being Peace,
Doing Justice"
Staff positions require participation in two planning sessions and a
conference call during the Spring.

Interfaith dialog on Cape Cod for adults and youth, April 4th
------------------------
Join religiously diverse young people across Cape Cod on April 4 to
serve the needs of the homeless, learn about the root causes of
homelessness and engage in an interfaith dialog to reflect on how our
faith traditions call us to serve others and work to improve the
situation of the disenfranchised. The event will be at the Federated
Church of Hyannis Fellowship Hall, 81 Willow Ave. For years the Youth
StreetReach program has been actively educating young people about
homeless and facilitating hospitality breakfasts in which these youths
can make a tangible impact as they serve their homeless neighbors on
Cape Cod. The morning will begin with the hospitality breakfast from
7am-10:30am, followed by an interfaith worship circle, and an interfaith
dialog from 11am-2pm. The interfaith dialog component will be grounded
in personal faith stories, religious texts and stories of faith heroes
such as Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham J. Heschel, Thich Nhat Hanh, Dorothy
Day, Badshah Khan, and Martin Luther King, Jr.. For more information,

Andover Newton Alum, Karen Hernandez-Andrews (2007), asks for your
prayers as she travels with a peace delegation from Christian Peacemaker

MDiv Curriculum Transition Process Ready
------------------------
Dear M.Div. Students,

If you are thinking about changing over to the new curriculum for the
fall of 2009 (namely, you'll have between 30-60 credits at the end of
this June), or if you are for-sure changing over (you'll have fewer than
30 credits come fall 2009), the transition process is ready if you are!

Visit the Connect! group entitled Master of Divinity Curriculum
Transition, which you can join from the Connect! main page once you log
in. In that setting you will find many resources, including the
worksheet you will need to submit to make the transition complete. You
have between now and July 27 to turn this form in to the Registrar, but
why wait? Nayda Aguila (naguila@ants.edu) or I (sdrummond@ants.edu) can
help you with technical questions, and Faculty members are ready to help
their advisees to consider what course of action makes the most sense
for each of them.

Stephen Richmond has Amnesia

Dear Andover Newton Community,

Stephen Richmond, whom many of you know, would like you to know that he
has amnesia. He does not remember anything that has happened to him
since last June. He didn't remember he was a student at Andover Newton,
or that he lived in Farwell. He is not going to remember who you are or
whether he's met you before or not. I know that you will be good
support to him as his memory slowly returns. It will probably come back
in bits and pieces. Medically he is fine. So if you see him around
campus please offer a friendly smile and "may I help you" to enable him
to get reoriented to the campus and community.

Moving Day for TABCOM (The American Baptist Churches of MA), March

Saturday March 21st, TABCOM will begin moving its offices from Dedham
to Groton.
HELP IS NEEDED A BOTH LOCATIONS

In Dedham, help is needed to packed and to load up the trucks. Help is
also needed with the yard sale that is being held to sell off some of
the office furniture such as desks and file cabinets. This is a great
place to look for those office items for your church, home office or

Help is needed at Grotonwood to unload the trucks the family center at
Grotonwood where the TABCOM administrative offices will be located. The

New worship "event" co-led by Professor Mark Burrow

Announcing a new venture co-led by Professor Mark Burrows: a worship
"event" called OpenSpirit, held each Sunday evening (gathering music at
6:50 p.m.; worship from 7 - 8 p.m.) in Framingham. The site is a "black
box" theater at the Performing Arts Center, 140 Pearl Street; entrance
from Pearl Street at the "red door." OpenSpirit is a blend of jazz music
shaped by a reflective voicing of ancient scriptures and modern poetry
and story. The worship brings together word and world, meditation and
engagement, all held in the simple shape of prayer and praise, word and
silence, sound and image. This is not a "church," and will not become
one; it is meant for seekers and those yearning for a service that is
shaped by the sounds of jazz and a reflective style of worship. For all
ages.

This Lent, we are exploring each week different themes related to
journeying in desert spaces; this coming Sunday, 8 March, the theme is

IFYI is scheduled for July 12-19, 2009 on the Theme: "Being Peace,
Doing Justice"
Staff positions require participation in two planning sessions and a
conference call during the Spring.

Community Day, March 31st

As you know, Community Day is Tuesday, March 31, and we will be
partnering with the Hebrew College Rabbinical School again. The day
will be dedicated to raising funds for the Macedonian Church of Christ
(MCC) in Springfield, MA, which was burned down by 3 racist arsonists
the day President Obama was elected. I spoke to Bishop Bryant Robinson,
Jr., head of the church, and he is very excited about our supporting
them in this way. They are just completing demolition of the burned
structure, and are hoping to begin rebuilding soon. He or someone from
the church will be with us for the morning worship service (which the
Journeys on the Hill group is planning).

An Invitation to You

You can participate in 2 ways--of course I hope all of you will be on
one of the teams that goes out to do service and learning. Our intent
is to solicit 10-12 projects that need to be done at private homes,
churches, or synagogues. We would send a team out to complete each
project and in return the home owner or church would make a contribution
to the MCC for the rebuilding of the church. Of course you are welcome
to make a donation to the church, and leave it with me.

My second invitation to you is to help us locate suitable projects. It
could be anything that could be completed by a team of 6-8 people (or
fewer or greater!) over the course of 4-5 hours. Possibilities include
yard work, cleaning out a garage or attic, painting something, getting
out a mailing, or almost anything you can imagine. The project site
should be within "T" or relatively easy driving distance from the
school (we always have sites in Boston so that is not too far). Do you
or someone you know have something which could be a site for us? If so
please let me know as soon as possible.

Survey iPod Touch Raffle Announcement, March 11th

Gracious Community Members:
189 people completed the survey on race and race relations on campus!
The organization helping us with the survey anticipated a 30% response
rate, yet this represents 48% of our campus community. Thanks to all
who participated and to all who entered into dialogue around the
opportunities for both institutional identity and self-reflection.

To those who entered the raffle: we will raffle the iPod Touch before
Wednesday Community Chapel in the Cafeteria at 12:45 on Wednesday, March
11th. We will perform the drawing and then process to Wilson Chapel

midst. Rev. Susan Criscione is the Director of Renewal House. Renewal
House is a domestic violence shelter for individuals in crisis and their
children. Since 1980, Renewal House has provided temporary emergency
shelter and advocacy services to more than 1,000 individuals and
families escaping domestic violence. We hope you will be able to join

Social Justice and Pastoral Care Event, March 11th

Our congregations are filled with mothers and fathers, aunts and
uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers. Many of our cherished
relationships begin at birth, yet childbirth is rarely given much
thought. You are invited to raise your awareness of the increasing
injustice in maternal health and how this effects us all, whether or not
we are child-bearers. How do we minister to mothers and families who
have suffered traumatic birth experiences? The first step is learning
that these individuals exist, and likely they are or will be members of
our own congregations.

The Silent Cry of Women: Pastoral Approaches to Childbearing is on
March 11th from 9am-12pm in the Wilson Chapel at Andover Newton
Theological School . Light refreshments will be served and RSVPs are

By Sanjay Subrahmanyam, Professor and Doshi Chair of Indian History at

The lecture will explore the construction of Indian religion in
publisher Jean Frédéric Bernard and engraver Bernard Picart's
multi-volume work on religious ceremonies and customs across the globe,
Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde
(1723-1743). Professor Subrahmanyam has written extensively on religion,
trade, and politics in early modern India (15th-18th centuries) and the
Indian Ocean region more broadly. His multifaceted and interdisciplinary
approach to the study of religion in economic and political transactions
holds broad implications for our understanding of the impact that
religion has on other aspects of culture. Professor Subrahmanyam has
served as Directeur d'études at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences
Sociales in Paris, and as Chair in Indian History and Culture at the
University of Oxford; he currently holds the Navin and Pratina Doshi
Chair of Indian History at UCLA.

The lecture will be followed by a light reception. This event is free
and open to the public.

189 people completed the survey on race and race relations on campus!
The organization helping us with the survey anticipated a 30% response
rate, yet this represents 48% of our campus community. Thanks to all

Community Day, March 31st *** New ***

As you know, Community Day is Tuesday, March 31, and we will be
partnering with the Hebrew College Rabbinical School again. The day
will be dedicated to raising funds for the Macedonian Church of Christ
(MCC) in Springfield, MA, which was burned down by 3 racist arsonists
the day President Obama was elected. I spoke to Bishop Bryant Robinson,
Jr., head of the church, and he is very excited about our supporting
them in this way. They are just completing demolition of the burned
structure, and are hoping to begin rebuilding soon. He or someone from
the church will be with us for the morning worship service (which the
Journeys on the Hill group is planning).

Ienas, has been transferred to Mass General Hospital to resolve the
issue with his abscessed appendicitis which will be drained tomorrow in
preparation for it to be removed a few days from now. He is room

and support for Ulil and Ienas as they go through this very stressful

New worship "event" co-led by Professor Mark Burrow *** New ***

Announcing a new venture co-led by Professor Mark Burrows: a worship
"event" called OpenSpirit, held each Sunday evening (gathering music at
6:50 p.m.; worship from 7 - 8 p.m.) in Framingham. The site is a "black
box" theater at the Performing Arts Center, 140 Pearl Street; entrance
from Pearl Street at the "red door." OpenSpirit is a blend of jazz music
shaped by a reflective voicing of ancient scriptures and modern poetry
and story. The worship brings together word and world, meditation and
engagement, all held in the simple shape of prayer and praise, word and
silence, sound and image. This is not a "church," and will not become
one; it is meant for seekers and those yearning for a service that is
shaped by the sounds of jazz and a reflective style of worship. For all
