New Winter courses:
ETHI711W-The Crisis on Wall Street and the Church on Main Street: A
Theological and Ethical Exploration of the Current Financial Crisis. Jan
19-23; 9-noon; 1-4 pm- Video Conference Course.
The course will explore the economics behind the crisis and how the
crisis will affect the church and its mission. The course will provide
some economic literacy in order to understand the crisis and then
explore its theological, ethical and pastoral dimensions. Throughout the
week, the course will focus on the impact of this crisis on the local
church.

GCIM625W-Your Next Step in Mission- Prof. Heim
Held at the Mercy Center, Madison, CT or at the Overseas Mission Study
Center, New Haven, CT. Week 1, Jan. 5-9; Week 2, Jan.12-16; Week 3, Jan.
19-23 and Week 4, Jan.26-30, 2009. An intensive, full time, week long
seminar run by OMSC. Andover Newton students must choose and attend one
of four seminars offered,
do all the work required of participants and then additional reflection
and research assigned by the supervising AN faculty.
In addition to AN tuition and fees, a registration fee and any room and
board costs chosen by the student are the student's
responsibility.Registration with the OMSC for either of the first two
weeks is required by December 1. See information at

GCIM740W-Church and Spirit: Inter-Cultural Studies- Musonda
Bwalya-Visiting Judson Professor; January 12-23, 900 am-noon.
This course is an exploration of the doctrine of the spirit in the
church in its biblical, historical, classical and contemporary witness,
from an intercultural vantage point. It endeavors to make use of these
witness to church and spirit as voices for a critical engagement with a
multiplicity of cultural understandings. in order to illustrate this, it
makes use of the African cosmological vantage point, as a case in point,
in order to enrich other global cultural settings, for an adequate
ecclessiological and pneumatological interpretation.

New Director of Admission and Recruiting & Ned Parker Promotion
------------------------
Dear Andover Newton Community Members,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Ms. Alison McCarty will be
joining the Andover Newton community as the new Director of Admission
and Recruitment. Alison brings extensive experience with her. Most
recently she's served as the Associate Director of MBA Admissions,
Harvard Business School, where she was responsible for processing
8-10,000 applications annually! She holds an M.B.A. from Harvard
Business School and the SB from M.I.T. Prior to her work in admissions
Alison worked in market analysis and development and growth strategy in
a Fortune 500 company, among other things. I am confident that our
recruitment efforts will flourish under her capable direction.

Although Alison has not been a student at Andover Newton, she already
has a close connection to the school. Her father was a UCC pastor and
as a youth she was greatly impacted by Andover Newton seminarians who
served as her youth directors. She is eager to join the community.
Alison lives with her husband Mark and 3 children in West Newton. She
will begin on Nov. 3. I know you will join me in giving her a warm
welcome.

I am also pleased to announce that Ned Parker will move from serving as
an Admissions Counselor to Assistant Director of Recruiting. Ned has
been doing terrific work for us and will be able to do even more in this
new capacity. Please extend your congratulations to Ned as well.

We are still having problems getting the wireless nodes up and running
on a consistent basis. We are working as quickly as possible to
determine the underlying cause of this complex problem.

Packages Now Available in Dabney
------------------------
Starting on Monday, October 6, all packages can be picked up at the
front desk of Dabney. We are excited to bring you this increase in
service, as now residents will be able to pick up packages from 8:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. We hope this simplifies
people's lives considerably. As usual students will receive a pink slip
in their Sturtevant mail boxes alerting them that they have a package.
There will be no package pick-up on Saturday, but students can always
ask someone else to pick up their package for them on a week day.

"Unitarian Universalism and Class: A Faith for a Few?" (originally
presented at General Assembly, 2008).

the historical ramifications of our faith? How is class reflected in our
worship and our words? Do we believe we are the best people, liberals

newcomers? What would an anti-classist UUA look like?

Calling all Student Pastors to help bring Peace!

I interned this summer with the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute which
works to end violence. It was started by Tina Chery after the murder of
her son Louis.

I thought this might be a great opportunity to colloborate regarding
not only educating congregations about gun violence and restorative
justice, but also to get involved in the work! They can send speakers,
and materials (like posters, a banner with buttons of the deceased, and
photos).

The Distinguished Speaker Series at Grace Chapel, Lexington, hosts Sam
Rodriguez, President of The National Hispanic Christian Leadership
Conference, speaking on "Immigration: Building Fences...or Bridges?"
Friday, October 10 at 7:30 PM, 59 Worthen Rd. This event is free of
charge.

A participant at both the Democratic and Republican Conventions, Mr.
Rodriguez is sought out by national political leaders as a spokesperson
for Hispanic issues. Newsweek Magazine reported presidential contenders
from both the Democratic and Republican Parties have courted Sam "with
ingratiating calls, offers to meet and VIP invitations to debates."

Join us to hear Margaret Trost, author of the just published book On
That Day, Everybody Ate, One Woman's Story of Hope and Possibility in
Haiti read from her book and share the experience which inspired her to
begin a feeding program for children in Haiti. Margaret is the
president of the What If? Foundation, which works in partnership with
the St. Clare's community of Port-au-Prince, pastored by Fr. Gerard
Jean-Juste, one of Haiti's most beloved social justice leaders.
Margaret will share the history of her collaboration and describe her
personal struggle to reconcile her own comparative privilege with the
staggering poverty of Haiti. Her book is a powerful story of courage
and faith that will lift your heart and bring you inspiration.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month - Candlelight Vigil

What: Candlelight Vigil
When: Thursday, October 23rd at 7:30pm - 8:30pm
Where: First Church in Roxbury, John Eliot Square, 10 Putnam St.,
Roxbury, MA 02119

The Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry (UUUM, www.uuum.org) is
hosting a candlelight vigil in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness
Month. The vigil will include poetry, music and personal words from
Renewal House (UUUM's domestic violence shelter) staff, volunteers and
former residients. On display will be the Silent Witness project, a
nationwide traveling exhibit of freestadning, life-size wodden
silhouettes. Each witness represents a woman, child, or man who was
murdered in Massachusetts due to acts of intimate partner violence.

Call for Teens! Boston Interfaith Mural Project, October 28th *** New

The 2008 Boston Interfaith Youth Project is looking for teens (ages
14-18) from Jewish, Muslim and Christian backgrounds to create a public
mural!

START DATE: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2008 @ 7PM for 6 wks
LOCATION: WEST END HOUSE, 105 ALLSTON ST, ALLSTON, MA

Beyond creating a collaborative work of art, this is an exciting
opportunity for teens and adult leaders to learn about people from other
religious communities.
- Teens need not have extensive art training
- Should have an interest in making friends and learning about other
cultures
- Must be available to meet Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30pm for 6-8
weeks
- Must be willing to design and produce a mural based on interfaith
discussion/imagery that will hang publicly
- Limited to 5 participants from each faith

Parking Permits: Grace Period coming to and end *** Hours Updated ***

Andover Newton typically has a grace period at the beginning of each
semester in which no towing will take place in order to give students
time to get their parking permits. That grace period is running out,
and will be up on October 10.

In a effort to get everyone "legal", and since the grace period is
almost up, I have decided to stay open from Noon to 1:00 pm Thursday and
Friday, October 9-10. If you have not yet done so, please stop by the
Building & Grounds office in the basement of Sturtevant Hall to fill out
your form and get your parking permit.

So the hours for the next two days will be...
Thursday, October 9, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm
Friday, October 10, 8:00 am - 1:00 pm

If for some reason you cannot make it to the office during these times,
please call Tricia at extension 265 to see if other arrangements can be
made.

Another Update on Kim Wadhams

Darlene Wadhams, wife of Kim Wadhams, just called to say that moments
after fellow Andover Newton student Kim received his new heart Sunday
morning it started beating. He was out of bed already yesterday and is
doing amazingly well. They believe he'll be home next week! Please
continue to keep them all in your thoughts and prayers. If you would

Prayers for Elisa Lucozzi's Dad

Student colleague Elisa Lucozzi would appreciate your prayers for her
father, Neil Lucozzi. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in August.
He is scheduled for radical removal of his stomach on October 20th.
Elisa would greatly appreciate the prayers of the community for his
healing and for comfort and courage for her stepmother Gail. Please
keep Neil, Gail, Elisa and the rest of the family in your thoughts and
prayers.

Student colleague Elisa Lucozzi would appreciate your prayers for her
father, Neil Lucozzi. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in August.
He is scheduled for radical removal of his stomach on October 20th.

I interned this summer with the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute which
works to end violence.
It was started by Tina Chery after the murder of her son Louis.

I thought this might be a great opportunity to colloborate regarding not
only educating congregations about gun violence and restorative justice,
but also to get involved in the work! They can send speakers, and
materials (like posters, a banner with buttons of the deceased, and
photos).

The Alliance for Assemblies of God in Higher Education is sponsoring its
sixth Seminarians Conference July 5-17, 2009 in Springfield, MO.
Students who attend the conference receive 6 semester hours of seminary
level credit from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, accredited
by the Association of Theological Schools. They also have a weekend
retreat where they dialogue with denominational executives. Students
have everything paid at the conference except air fare to get there.

Packages Now Available in Dabney *** New ***

Starting on Monday, October 6, all packages can be picked up at the front desk of Dabney. We are excited to bring you this increase in service, as now residents will be able to pick up packages from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. We hope this simplifies people's lives considerably. As usual students will receive a pink slip in their Sturtevant mail boxes alerting them that they have a package. There will be no package pick-up on Saturday, but students can always ask someone else to pick up their package for them on a week day.

BGLANTS Fellowship meeting -Tuesday in Upper Noyes at 12pm

Come and help plan the National Coming Out Day service. BGLANTS is a fellowship group of Andover Newton Theological School students who are concerned with issues facing gay, lesbian, bi and trans people in ministry and the church. Please join us on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 from 7pm-9pm in Wilson Chapel at Andover Newton Theological School when UUCANS will host The Rev. Mark W. Harris, Minister of First Parish Watertown, for an encore presentation of his fifth lecture from the 2008 Minns Lecture Series, "Unitarian Universalism and Class: A Faith for a Few?" (originally presented at General Assembly, 2008).

From the Minns Lecture website (http://minnslectures.org/home.htm): Lecture 5 - A Faith for a Few?: This lecture will ask, what are some of the historical ramifications of our faith? How is class reflected in our worship and our words? Do we believe we are the best people, liberals who can save the world?
What has been our relationship to issues of race, and why have we been more successful with the gay and lesbian community in attracting newcomers? What would an anti-classist UUA look like?

Seminarian Assemblies of God Conference

The Alliance for Assemblies of God in Higher Education is sponsoring its sixth Seminarians Conference July 5-17, 2009 in Springfield, MO. Students who attend the conference receive 6 semester hours of seminary level credit from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. They also have a weekend retreat where they dialogue with denominational executives. Students have everything paid at the conference except air fare to get there.
