Racial Justice Fellow: ACLU of Massachusetts

POSITION OPENING
RACIAL JUSTICE FELLOW
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION OF MASSACHUSETTS

January 2007

The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts (ACLUM), a
statewide affiliate of the National ACLU, is seeking to fill a one-year
position of Racial Justice Fellow to lead the affiliate's work on racial
justice issues, with a particular focus on the following priority
areas:.

Ending the "school to prison pipeline".- The Fellow will develop
ACLUM's legal, educational and legislative work, in conjunction with the
Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law
School, aimed at examining the extent of the "School to Prison Pipeline"
in Massachusetts and fashioning remedies to redress the problem which
adversely affects students of color in disproportionate numbers. School
policies such as "zero tolerance," racially disparate expulsions and
suspensions;, law enforcement/school "roundtables"; high stakes
graduation exams, and grade retention, will be addressed through a
variety of means.

Challenging the related issue of the racially disproportionate contact
and confinement of youth of color (DMC) with the criminal justice
system. - The Fellow will build on the existing work of ACLUM and the
ACLU nationally in highlighting the DMC problem in Massachusetts, by
developing appropriate litigation, legislation, and public education
strategies to end race discrimination in the juvenile justice system.

In addition, the Racial Justice Fellow will serve as the ACLU of
Massachusetts' key person in the community on issues relating to race
discrimination, such as racial profiling.


QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must:
Have a law degree or similar graduate degree and prior experience in
and demonstrated commitment to civil rights and racial justice, with
excellent legal research and writing skills. Be self-motivated,
reliable, and capable of working well in coalitions and with community
organizations. Have excellent communication skills, including public
speaking and writing. Be capable of working cooperatively with other
staff on litigation, legislation, and public education.

liberties issues and their implications.

decisively; flexible and well organized.
d.. An emotionally mature and self-confident person, with good
judgment about people. e.. A person with a sense of humor in order to
maintain balance and perspective.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Annual salary of $50,000 plus excellent benefits package. Fellowship
may be renewable, depending on funding.
