Excel Academy Charter School is a tuition-free, charter middle school
serving 178 students from the urban communities of Chelsea and East
Boston. ~70% of our students are Latino and ~70% of our students come
from low-income backgrounds.

Mission

Excel Academy Charter School prepares middle school students to succeed
in high school and college, apply their learning to solve relevant
problems, and engage productively in their communities.

Track Record of Success

Excel Academy has had a track record of success, particularly as
measured by student performance on the Massachusetts Comprehensive
Assessment System (MCAS) exam. Students in Excel Academy?s first 8th
grade graduating class outperformed students from nearly every district
in the state, scoring in the top 9% statewide on the 2006 English MCAS
exam and in the top 6% statewide on the 2006 math MCAS exam. With a
majority (67%) of Latino students, Excel Academy posted a 100% passing
rate on both the 7th and 8th grade English MCAS exams ? one of only 10
districts across the state to achieve such success.

Program Overview

? Core: Students take 100 minutes of mathematics and 100 minutes of
English every day to ensure that they master core skills and content
necessary for success in high school and college.

? Connections: Students take 100 minutes of science and 100 minutes of
social studies twice a week to gain core skills in the scientific method
and geography and to explore questions that relate to their communities
but that also possess global significance.

? Focus: Students receive targeted tutoring and academic support
focused on individual needs throughout the week.

? Enrichment: Students receive formal instruction in the arts and
fitness and also participate in other enrichment activities.

Current Openings

We are seeking individuals who have the passion to contribute to a
growing school serving an urban student population that already has a
strong track record of success. We are accepting applications for the
following positions:

? Middle School Teachers: Middle school English, math, science, social
studies, English language learner, special education, art and
fitness/health.

? Dean of Administration: Responsible for the development and
management of various school programs.

? Dean of Curriculum: Responsible for overseeing curriculum development
and instruction.

? Paid Intern: Seeking an individual who is interested in gaining
experience in a successful, urban, public, charter school. S/he will
have the opportunity to take on both instructional and administrative
responsibilities.

Qualities Sought

? Commitment To Urban Education: Belief that there is not a more urgent
task than to educate students from low-income, urban backgrounds.

? Mission alignment: Belief that every student should be held to the
highest academic and behavioral expectations. An understanding that a
structured environment is essential for learning.

? Entrepreneurial spirit: Openness to change, willingness to
problem-solve, and interest in developing new ideas & programs. ?
Qualifications: Previous teaching experience preferred.

Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
