Second Baptist Church has been in Suffield for 200 years. We are a
community-based congregation committed to Jesus Christ and related to
the American Baptist Churches USA. Those who come to Second Baptist are
ones whose families have been in Suffield for generations, as well as
ones who have recently moved to this area. The church is diverse in age,
religious background, racial and ethnic heritage, economic level and
theological belief. We offer a variety of intergenerational worship and
prayer services, classes, and musical ensembles, as well as fellowship
and ministry opportunities to enrich spiritual, family & community
life.
Goal: To serve the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the people of the Second
Baptist Church and surrounding community.
Work In Cooperation With: The Pastor (directly accountable), Board of
Christian Education (BCE), Adult Education Taskforce, Teachers, Parents,
Youth Group Leaders, Other Committees and the Church At Large,
Ecumenical Partners (Bible School)
Time Commitment: 20 hours per week
Finances: Provided through Church Budget
Detailed Job Description:
1.. COORDINATE overall Christian Education program for all ages (not
including youth group).
2.. EMPOWER THE LAITY TO DO MINISTRY.
3.. COORDINATE WITH THE PASTOR as needed; meet regularly at staff
meetings to share needs, plans, and ideas.
4.. BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: Attend monthly meetings and prepare
reports for them.
5.. RECOMMEND CURRICULA: By consulting with the Board of Christian
Education and Pastor, help teachers select curricula.
6.. SUPPORT & ASSIST TEACHERS
a.. ENLIST TEACHERS by encouraging congregants to use their gifts
and talents.
b.. Provide teacher TRAINING & SUPPORT meetings throughout the year
as needed
c.. Assist teachers individually and in teams to PREPARE MATERIALS,
adapt them to their situations, and to utilize their time and space.
Also to locate, organize and make available resource materials.
d.. Inform & enlist teachers, board members and others in
LEADERSHIP TRAINING opportunities in the denomination and on local,
state and national levels. Assist and publicize community-training
events as they arise.
e.. ACQUIRE AND CATALOG RESOURCES such as audio-visuals and other
teaching aids.
7. PROVIDE PROGRAM SUPPORT
a.. COORDINATE CHILDREN'S SERMON TIME: Coordinate leaders for the
Sunday children's time.
b.. KIDS FOR CHRIST: Help lay leaders to plan and support this
before worship program.
c.. COORDINATE VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL with our ecumenical partners.
d.. COORDINATE SPECIAL NEEDS FELLOWSHIP
e.. ASSIST SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Plan and assist chapel, holiday
programs, service projects, church school picnic, Promotion Sunday,
Children's Sunday, and others recommended by the BCE
f.. PROMOTE EDUCATION FOR ALL AGES: Work with the church office to
inform the church as a whole of what is happening in Christian Education
via the bulletin, church calendar, bulletin boards, internet, etc.
g.. PARTICIPATE IN CONTINUING EDUCATION: Attend conferences,
support and training events - particularly those provided by ABCCONN -
as approved by the Board of Christian Education.

2.. A person who is committed to the educational ministries of the
local church.
3.. A person who has some theological education/training and/or is
intellectually curious about her or his faith.
4.. A person who supports and teaches the American Baptist Churches,
USA mission and identity.
5.. A person who will seek to maintain a co-operative relationship
with the Hartford Association, the American Baptist Churches of
Connecticut and the American Baptist Churches, USA.
6.. A person who will endeavor to fulfill the Covenant and Code of
Ethics for Professional Church Leaders of the ABC,USA.
7.. A person who is willing to submit to a background check.
Position Description
Director/Minister of Christian Education

First Baptist Church, West Harford, Connecticut, is searching for a
part-time
Director/Minister of Christian Education to work in a cooperative
relationship with its Senior Minister, Minister of Music and others. In
the 18-20 hours per week, the Director/Minister of Christian Education
will exercise leadership particularly in the areas of the church's
Christian education program and the growth of the church. During the
summer months, this position will be 10 hours per week.
Responsibilities
1.. Work with and be the staff person for the Christian Education
Committee of the church.
2.. Work directly with church youth (grades 6-12) as the primary
youth leader and be present at youth activities along with other adult
youth leaders.
3.. Work with the Christian Education Committee to recruit and train
adult volunteers to work with children and youth.
4.. Work with the Christian Education Committee to monitor and
evaluate Crib Room staffing.
5.. Be present in church on Sunday mornings to coordinate and/or
staff the Sunday morning Christian education program of the church.
6.. Work to develop and provide creative learning experiences for
children, youth and adults outside the Sunday morning program.
7.. A person who has experience of and/or is willing to learn and
facilitate the Rotation Model of Christian education.
8.. Coordinate volunteers for Children's Time in worship and lead
Children's Time once a month.
9.. Work with the Growth and Outreach Committee.
