Transition-into-Ministry Residency

Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Des Moines, Iowa,
under a grant from the Lilly Foundation, is seeking to call two
Pastoral
Residents for a working period of 27 months (June 1, 2007-August 31,
2009). The Transition-into-Ministry (TiM) program will seek to help
new
ministers articulate their pastoral vocation, internalize disciplined
patterns of learning, and identify resources that will sustain them
through long and effective pastorates. Faithful ministry over the
long
haul requires relationships of integrity, patterns of reflection, and
resources for vocational renewal. Residents will be challenged to
devise models that incorporate these three characteristics of ministry
that can be employed in a wide range of ministerial settings.
Residents
will be helped to recognize their own needs, discover their own
resources-internal and external, and find the crucial places of prayer
and of laughter in their ministries. The position salary, including
benefits, is $52,390 annually. Letters of Intent are due January 19,
2007 and completed applications are due February 23, 2007. Invited
candidates will be interviewed in Des Moines at Plymouth during March,
2007 and notification in April, 2007. Please contact Frank Thomas,
Pastoral Residency Coordinator, at 515-255-3149; 515-778-5100 (cell);

Plymouth Church is an unusual church. In a period characterized by
decline in membership of the mainline churches, Plymouth has
demonstrated steady, if not spectacular growth-from 2,482 members in
1957 to a current membership of 3,058, with an average weekly worship
attendance of close to 1,000. We are not a downtown church, yet we
are
a part of the central city of Des Moines, residing in our present
location since 1926. As population in the area has shifted
increasingly
to the suburbs, Plymouth has remained in the city to conduct a
ministry
to the entire metropolitan area. We draw our membership from a
30-mile
radius, aided greatly by being only a few blocks from an interchange
of
I-235, the major east-west expressway through the core of the city.
As
recently as 2000, we recommitted ourselves to being a presence in the
city of Des Moines, expanding our building with a $10 million addition
for programming space. This new facility came on line in the fall of
2003, greatly enhancing our potential for ministry.

Plymouth Church is blessed with a strong and mutually supportive
program
staff team headed by Senior Minister David Ruhe. Each member of our
staff shares in the general pastoral ministry of the church and each
have a particular area of emphasis. Staff members work closely with
one
another as a collegial pastoral team, and with the lay leadership of
the
congregation in a spirit of collaboration.

Chief Safety Officer and Housing Coordinator

CHIEF SAFETY OFFICER and HOUSING COORDINATOR
Virginia Commonwealth University-School of the Arts in Qatar
Doha, Qatar

This position offers a competitive salary, plus a 30% overseas stipend, coupled with housing, car allowance, family travel, and K-12 local school tuition for up to four family members. The position is available January 2007 or as soon thereafter as possible.

VCU School of the Arts in Qatar (www.qatar.vcu.edu), the leading design school in the Middle East, is a four-year campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. Located in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, VCUQatar is affiliated with the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (www.qf.edu.qa). VCU School of the Arts in Richmond, Virginia, is ranked as the leading art and design program among all public universities in the US and maintains identical standards for VCUQ. Established in 1998, VCUQ offers professional BFA degrees in Fashion Design, Graphic Design, and Interior Design for students from the Gulf region and other countries. Plans are under way for a BA in Art History/Museum Studies and MFA programs in Design, Interior Design, and Visual Communication. The School is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. The School has substantial involvement with the emerging design industries in Qatar and is a significant catalyst for that growth.

VCUQ benefits from a funding situation that allows it to be driven by innovative programmatic needs rather than typical fiscal constraints. Externally funded research contracts are expanding with the rapid development of Qatar, now among the wealthiest countries in the world based upon per capita GDP. The School is commencing a $1.7 million contract for the design of Qatar military uniforms. With an annual budget of $20 million, VCUQ's full-time faculty and administrative staff of 75 (50% female), instruct an undergraduate student body of 180. With the offering of new graduate and undergraduate programs the enrollment is expected to grow to approximately 300 over the next five years. The School maintains an enviable student/faculty ratio of 5:1 with enrollment of 10-12 in most classes. Transition to coeducation will take place in 2007. Housed in an 82,000 square foot state-of-the-art-facility, the School has a 42,000 square foot addition in development with ground-breaking anticipated in 2006-07. VCUQ was the first campus established in Education City, a unique 2,500 acre campus community on the outskirts of Doha with facilities designed by leading architects for US universities. VCUQ since has been joined by other US institutions including

* Carnegie-Mellon University (Business & Computer Science),
* Cornell University's Weill School of Medicine,
* Georgetown University (School of Foreign Service), and
* Texas A & M University (Engineering).

Qatar, where English is the standard second language, is perhaps the most liberal, hospitable and progressive of the Arabian Gulf countries. The population of Qatar is 900,000--150,000 Qatari, 4,000 US citizens, the remainder ex-patriates. Doha, with a population of 350,000, has all the conveniences generally found in a modern city, but it also maintains a traditional Arab flavor, evident in the old markets and the city's Islamic Arab architecture. The US Embassy considers Qatar among the safest countries in the world for Americans.

Responsibilities as Chief Safety Officer include:
ø primary planning responsibility for the VCUQ emergency evacuation plan;
ø chairing the security task force;
ø ensuring the safety of faculty and staff in both the VCUQ facility and their accommodations;
ø integration of security planning with VCUQ technology and facilities management; and
ø coordination of security with QF security planning.

Responsibilities as Housing Coordinator include:
ø providing the highest level of service to faculty, students, administrators and the school's various constituencies;
ø seeking housing options, including the negotiation of real estate leases, for approximately 75 faculty and staff expatriates;
ø ensuring the continued maintenance of the VCUQ leased accommodations;
ø ensuring the readiness of accommodations for various visitors;
ø trouble shooting problems with housing for faculty and staff;
ø working closely with the Qatar Foundation Accommodations manager and staff;
ø working closely with VCUQ administration, faculty and staff; and
ø other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications include:
ø a bachelor's degree in a relevant field; master's desirable; or equivalent training and work experience.
ø a record of accomplishment in administration, preferably in an institution of higher education;
ø at least three years experience in housing and/or facilities management;
ø significant experience in organizational security and safety operations and planning;
ø a working knowledge of laws, regulations, mandates, and current issues in housing and safety;
ø excellent analytical, managerial, communication, and interpersonal skills;
ø the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of administrators, faculty, staff, and students; and
ø the ability to work independently while organizing and prioritizing to meet deadlines.

Candidate materials will be reviewed upon receipt and continue until the position is filled. Confidential inquiries are invited. Nominations and applications, all of which will be held in total confidence, may be submitted to

CYF Opportunities for UU Seminarians

One of the most exciting and revolutionary projects of Unitarian Universalism has just begun in the form of an online church and spiritual community. The Church of the Younger Fellowship is a specialty ministry effort between the Church of the Larger Fellowship and young adult UUs from around the globe. The CYF has nearly four hundred members representing four continents and offers many of us at Meadville Lombard the opportunity to help the CYF and our own ministries.

Currently, the CYF is seeking applicants for several volunteer positions ideally held by seminarians and young-adult ministers. The CYF is looking to create a chaplaincy team of several young adult seminarians who have completed at least one unit of CPE. CYF Chaplains would be charged with responding to pastoral care requests from CYF members via email. CYF members in need may also be referred to Chaplains and be asked to support discussion leaders as need arises.

The CYF is also interested in finding a young adult seminarian or minister who would be willing to lead a "New To UUism" discussion group. Resources and an existing course curriculum are available, as well as assistance in creating new topics relevant to young adults.

As the CYF is currently the fastest growing segment of any church in the UUA and is the most advanced utilization of technology for spiritual outreach throughout the denomination, these two positions are excellent opportunities for any aspiring minister's résumé. Don't miss the chance to become a part of the church that will eventually be taught in UU History in the next generation!

Time commitment is limited to several hours a month and most correspondence will occur via email and the http://uucyf.org website. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 * 35 and all chaplaincy applicants must have completed one unit of CPE. Please write to info@uucyf.org to see how you might contribute to this essential ministry and help others to "Keep the Faith."

As always, the CYF is looking for audio, video and text sermons to share with its membership: please write to info@uucyf.org to find out how you can publish your work.
I thank you for your time and consideration. Please contact me with any questions or contacts.

Sincerely,
