UCC Scholarship for Chautauqua Summer Internship

Scholarship Opportunity for Summer Seminary Intern for the Chautauqua
United Church of Christ Society, Inc. : Summer 2009: July 11--August 15, 2009

Overview of Scholarship: This scholarship is for the purpose of supporting a seminary student who is currently in-care, within the denomination. The scholarship is for a period of five weeks during the summer of 2009 at the Chautauqua United Church of Christ Society, Inc. located within the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York. The internship will extend from July 11-August 15, 2009. The intern (and immediate family) will be provided with housing, two gate passes (one for him/herself and one for a spouse) and reimbursement for one parking space for the five-week period. Transportation to and from Chautauqua, New York is the financial responsibility of the intern. The intern will also be responsible for his/her own meals during this period. A $1,000 stipend is provided to the intern--to be paid in two installments.

Qualifications: The applicant must be a full-time student in an ATS-accredited seminary in the United States. The applicant must have a cumulative grade point average of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the commensurate proportion on other scales). An unofficial seminary transcript should be included with the application. The candidate must be in-care with the denomination and must receive a recommendation from the appropriate official in-care coordinator. Standing in the United Church of Christ is preferred, but not required. The candidate must be committed to parish or institutional ministry in his/her denomination. The applicant must have completed at least twenty-four semester hours of seminary education at the time of the application. The applicant must provide three references (one of which should be from the denominational entity responsible for the in-care student program (i.e. Association or Associate Conference minister) and write a three-page essay on one of the following subjects--theology, ethics, or faith in the public square.

The CUCC seeks students with a financial need and/or who come from economically, racially or ethnically under-represented populations.

Scope of the Internship: The successful applicant will assist the Chaplain Administrator in the areas of Sunday morning worship, and facilitation of the Chaplain-of-the-Week and the Sunday Fellowship programs. The Intern will provide administrative support for the Chaplain Administrator (i.e. assist in the coordination of information for the weekly bulletin, overall headquarters administration and activities). The Intern will be responsible for designing and conducting one original seminar during the five-week period for guests of the CUCC and others regarding a Chautauqua Institution theme of the week.

The Intern will be housed in either the Mayflower or Reformed House. It is expected that the Intern attend the daily and Sunday worship services and engage in meaningful discussion and dialogue with the Chaplain Administrator and others within the CUCC community once a week regarding the Chautauqua Institution, Chaplain-of-the-Week sermons and lectures.

CUCC Program Oversight: The CUCC Intern Program oversight is provided by the Chaplain Administrator and a designated member of the Board of Directors. The day-to-day supervision of the Intern is the responsibility of the Chaplain Administrator. The Intern reports to the Chaplain Administrator. At the end of the internship period, the Intern is required to provide a 5-page report on the experience. Time: Approximately four hours transitioning to eight hours a week

Purpose of the Position:
The youth worker helps in all aspects of the youth programs of First
Lutheran Church of the Reformation. The program's normal hours are
from 6-7:30 Sunday nights and the worker would be expected to help set
up and clean up. The position would transition to youth group director
for Sept., 2009. The director will be responsible for helping the Jr.
and Sr. High Youth (grades 7-12) of this congregation and the larger
community to grow in their commitment to Jesus Christ by building
relationships, fostering a safe and supportive Christian environment and
planning service and social activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. The worker in the spring of '09 would assist the director and
adults who are youth group leaders. The worker would help to develop
programs relevant to youths' lives from Biblical, theological,
liturgical and ethical sources. Trusted relationships would be developed
with youth in the program.

2. The worker would accompany youth, when possible, on special outings
or events. If possible (however not necessary) the worker would assist
in a mission trip to Pennsylvania the week of June 29th, 2009.

3. As the Youth Group Director (fall, '09), plans and facilitates
with Pastor Aurand, adults and church youth the programs of the church
youth group. This program occurs primarily on Sunday nights as stated
above, though also involves other trips, activities and retreats. Main
programming occurs from Sept.-June, and minimal programming occurs
during the summer months. Responsibilities include: the facilitating of
parents to help with Sunday night meals and to work with youth;
facilitating the group spirit through recreation activities outdoors and
in the youth rooms; developing programming having to do with practical
applications of Christianity as well as personal, intellectual and
fellowship growth; arranging logistics for servant projects and
retreats; exercising trusted relationships with youth as a spiritual
mentor.

4. As worker and director, works to exercise the religious component of
youth group in the lives of youth to deepen faith lives, for example,
having youth lead prayers, songs and services, helping with regular
church worship if planned, and connecting with wider church programs and
issues. Builds on '09 mission trip/service experience.

5. As worker and director, receives instructions from parents about any
special needs of the youngsters.

6. Both as worker and director, meets on a regular basis with the Youth
and Family committee.

SKILLS
1. Has an understanding/experience of work with church youth.
2. Has good interpersonal, communicative and organizational skills and
the ability to work in partnership with staff, church leadership and
parents.
3. Can be a trusted mentor, showing sensitivity to the spiritual and
emotional needs of the youth, and having the ability to listen and
respond in a mature and helpful manner.
4. Has a strong Christian faith and spiritual life and the desire to
encourage youth in deepening their faith lives and becoming followers of
Jesus.
4. Is willing to commit to lead the groups for at least one academic
year and preferably two as well as have the ability to work flexible
hours.
6. Is personable, enthusiastic and creative.

PROCEDURE
The prospective youth group worker and director will review the
child/adult protection policy of the church and agree to conform to it.


The worker/director will submit to customary background checks.

COMPENSATION

Works in the spring/summer of 2009 as an assistant at approximately 4
hours at the compensation rate of $20 an hour. If able to attend the
mission trip, is paid for the numbers of hours of work incurred. Works
approximately 8 hours a week as director in the fall of '09 with a
compensation rate of $25 an hour.

Payment of any expenses incurred from youth group outings, including
admission costs, travel expenses, overnight lodging, etc.

Gas mileage reimbursement for the commute at IRS rates

According to the First Lutheran Personnel policy, voluntary termination
terms are 4 weeks' notice by either party.

Job Descripton: OVERVIEW
This position develops outreach and educational materials for groups
and congregations, and informs, inspires and encourages the quilters and
kit-makers within Lutheran congregations. This position manages all
domestic components of LWR's quilt and kit ministry, tying together
its tradition and historical value with innovative new opportunities for
congregations, groups and individuals to put their faith into action.
The Parish Projects Coordinator is a member of the Church & Community
Engagement unit of the External Relations department.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Educate, instruct and affirm thousands of individuals, groups and
congregations producing quilts and kits valued at $12 million annually
for distribution overseas to communities in need:

·Produce and distribute Faith in Action mailings three times a year,
collaborating with other External Relations personnel as appropriate
·Assist in the production of the Be Involved booklet, updated annually
and redesigned biennially
·Maintain and develop new content for the Be Involved section of
LWR's website, including online forms and downloadable resources
·Produce and distribute quarterly Faith in Action electronic
newsletter
·Conceptualize and participate in the production of videos related to
quilts and kits, in collaboration with the Communication unit
·Identify content for news releases, web features and newsletter or
media articles, or other educational materials in consultation with the
Program Associate for Emergency Response
·Orient staff at the LWR Resource Center to updates and changes to
quilt and kit guidelines, appropriate responses to frequently asked
questions and new resources


2. Manage all domestic components of the LWR's quilt and kit
ministry:

·Develop and implement volunteer management strategy for Key Leaders
(local organizers of LWR Ingatherings)
·Design and implement fundraising efforts to support the quilt and kit
ministry through the Project Comfort Fund and Good Samaritan Quilt
Plaza
·Work with the Program Associate for Emergency Response to manage
warehouse operations related to customer service and accurate receipting
of donations
·In collaboration with Program Associate for Emergency Response, make
recommendations to the International Programs Department regarding
changes to quilt and kit guidelines, including the elimination,
modification or addition of projects in the LWR Parish Projects
portfolio, based on research and feedback from U.S. constituents and
overseas partners
·Participate with staff in the International Programs Department in
assessing the impact of quilts and kits overseas, including at least one
annual monitoring trip to visit quilt and kit recipients and LWR's
distributing partner(s)
·Monitor trends within peer organizations operating in-kind giving
programs; identify and implement best practices
·Identify and develop proposals for new hands-on projects or
initiatives for congregations and groups that will advance the
organization toward meeting its Strategic Objectives
·Manage the Parish Projects portion of the annual operational plan and
budget of the Church & Community Engagement unit, within the framework
of LWR's strategic plan
·Ensure timely, accurate and thorough entry, ongoing management and
optimal use of data in LWR's database relating to individuals, groups
and congregations involved in Parish Projects

3. Contribute to overall External Relations activities:

·Write feature articles for the LWR newsletter, church publications,
and other strategic publications that highlight LWR's quilt and kit
ministry and other aspects of the organization
Speak and lead workshops at Lutheran events
·Assist in the planning for high-impact presence at key regional and
national events
·Participate in cross-unit teams for special projects and planning

4. Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

1. Deep commitment to Lutheran World Relief's core values and ability
to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
2. Strong familiarity with Lutheran theology, church structures, and
church member motivations and sensitivities; previous work in church
context highly preferred.
3. Undergraduate degree and at least three years of experience with
progressively increasing responsibilities in congregational ministry,
grassroots community organizing, volunteer management and/or adult
non-formal education.
4. Expertise in all areas of communication, including the ability to
speak confidently in public and to write engaging and appropriate copy.

5. Demonstrated ability to take initiatives and follow through on
projects and policies; good organization skills and the ability to
manage a variety of tasks productively.
6. Ability to work as part of a team, both internally with fellow staff
as well as with LWR's partners and allies; excellent interpersonal
skills.
7. Experience in designing faith-based curriculum or ministry
programming (youth and family, outdoor ministry, etc.).
8. Creativity, imagination, problem-solving skills, and the ability to
adjust direction and strategies.
9. Ability to travel within the U.S. and internationally on occasion.
10. Familiarity with publication design, print production and website
management a plus.

SUPERVISOR: Director for Church & Community Engagement

INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Works closely with Program Associate for
Emergency Response. Collaborates with Communications unit, Mission
Advancement unit and other members of Church & Community Engagement
unit.

EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Frequent contact with U.S. constituency,
including Key Leaders.

SALARY AND TERMS: Salary is negotiable and commensurate with
experience. This full-time position is located in Baltimore, MD. This
position is an exempt position from the fair labor standards act. An
