Orlando E. Costas Lectureship: Dr. Alex Nava, “God and Hip Hop”

The 2009 Orlando E. Costas Lecture, “God and Hip Hop,” will be given by Dr. Alex Nava of the University of Arizona.  His lecture will explore the origins and development of Hip-Hop with a special focus on the political and religious elements of rap music. Particular attention will be given to the prophetic and apocalyptic moments in the history of Hip-Hop.

A reception will follow the lecture.

Dr. Nava received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has taught at Seattle University and is currently associate professor of Religious Studies at the University of Arizona.  His first book is entitled The Mystical and Prophetic Thought of Simone Weil and Gustavo Gutierrez (S.U.N.Y. Press, 2001). He has recently completed a new book project entitled Wonder and Exile in the New World.

Dr. Orlando E. Costas was a beloved dean of faculty and Judson Professor of Missiology at Andover Newton from 1984 until his untimely death in 1987. Each year since 2007, Andover Newton grants three full-tuition scholarships to incoming students from the Hispanic community.  This scholarship is offered in the name of Orlando E. Costas and his groundbreaking reflections on Liberation Theology, including his 1982 book, Christ Outside the Gate: Mission Beyond Christendom.

‘One Book, Many Voices’, a lecture and documentary film screening with Liz Walker

Join the Massachusetts Bible Society for the annual Harrell F. Beck Lectureship with award-winning journalist, documentary filmmaker, and ANTS trustee Liz Walker. Liz will be talking about the role of media in religion and screening One Book, Many Voices, her latest documentary about the Bible and the diversity of interpretations that accompany it.

Liz Walker is Host and Executive Producer of ‘Better Living with Liz Walker’ a half hour inspirational magazine airing on WCVB TV, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.  The show, which focuses on healthy communities, is an extension of Liz’s new ministry.  An ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and a 2005 graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Walker has chosen to combine her communication skills with her spiritual passion to serve the world.  Walker, an Emmy award winning television journalist, anchored WBZ Television’s evening newscasts for almost 20 years before stepping down to enter seminary and begin the ordination process.
