In Celebration of Rumi: an afternoon of music, poetry, and whirling dervishes

Please join us at Andover Newton for a special afternoon of music, the dancing of dervishes, and inspiring readings from the work of 13th century Persian Sufi mystic Jalal al-din Mohammad Rumi, known in the West simply as “Rumi.”

Rumi’s passionate and powerful work is filled with a longing for God, the Friend and the Beloved. It ranks with the most popular and widely read poetry in the United States today.

The program will close with a traditional Dervish Zikr ceremony.

Tickets available at the door for $15; $7 for seniors and full-time students. Andover Newton faculty and students admitted free.

Presented by the Ruah Spirituality Institute, co-sponsored by Worship, Theology, and the Arts at Andover Newton Theological School.

William Johnson Everett reads from his novel “Red Clay, Blood River”

Author William Johnson Everett, former Andover Newton professor, will read from his 2008 novel, Red Clay, Blood River. Set in the United States and South Africa, the novel explores the themes of emigration, invasion, and exploitation and “issues of ecological and human reconcilliation.” The event is free and open to the public.

William Johnson Everett is a former Andover Newton professor and the author of eight books and numerous articles on social ethics and religion. His teaching career spans thirty years in the nations of Germany, India, South Africa, and the United States.

This is the first of three related events on the Andover Newton campus. At 1:00 pm in Wilson Chapel, Rev. Everett will conduct a Community Worship Service with Prof. Mark Burrows. At 7:00 pm in the Peck Conference Room, Worcester Hall, Rev. Everett will conduct a Boston Theological Institute Ethics Colloquium.

Please join us for a rousing performance, discussion and sing-along of inspiring music from Jewish and Christian faith traditions. Rabbi Daniel Lehmann will discuss the Jewish spiritual music tradition, illustrated by the Zamir Chorale of Boston under the direction of Dr. Joshua Jacobson; the program will feature selections of Hassidic music and works by Louis Lewandowski, Shlomo Carlebach and Ernest Bloch. Priscilla Deck will lead a discussion of Chrisitan spiritual music, complemented by a performance by the Andover Newton Community Choir, directed by Reverend Burns Stanfield.

Free and open to the public.

You’ll have a chance to join in the singing, led by Cantor Louise Treitman. The afternoon also includes an opportunity to learn more about the many programs of Hebrew College’s School of Jewish Music (SJM), ranging from pluralistic cantorial ordination to certificate programs in Jewish sacred music and Jewish music education.

Please join us for this Vigil against Domestic Violence in Wilson Chapel, Sponsored by:Safe Havens Interfaith Partnership against Domestic Violence, the Andover Newton Student Association,and the Center for Interreligious and Communal Leadership Education (CIRCLE), at Andover Newton Theological School and Hebrew College.

Nearly 25% of women and 7.6% of men are raped and/or physically assaulted by a current or former spouse, cohabiting partner, or dating partner/acquaintance at some time in their lifetime (based on survey of 16,000 participants, equally male and female, National Violence against Women Survey, 2000

Shelters for victims of domestic violence need your help. We will contribute any donations brought to the vigil to Renewal House Shelter. Please consider donating a gift certificate to Target, Wallgreens, or Stop&Shop. In addition the following items are particularly useful: For the household: Twin bed sheets, Twin bed comforters, Pillows, Silverware, Laundry detergent, VHS/DVDs for children and adults. Personal Items: Full size shampoo and conditioner, Sanitary pads, Razors, Brushes and combs, Face cream, Small containers of Vaseline. For the Little Ones: Baby wipes, Diaper cream; Baby shampoo and soap. New Muslim Cool: Film Screening and Q&A with Director Jennifer Maytorena Taylor

New Muslim Cool is a film following the story of a young man coming of age, facing his deepest questions about faith, family, community and artistry. Share Puerto Rican American rapper Hamza Pérez’s dramatic ride through the streets, projects and jail cells of urban America, following his spiritual journey to some surprising places, including unexpected connections with Jews and Christians in post-9/11 America.

This event will include a Q and A with Director Jennifer Maytorena Taylor.

Forever MUSE: A Celebration of Thirty-Five Years

MUSE (MUsic Serving Elders) is celebrating 35 years since its founding by lyric tenor and Andover Newton Alumnus Paul W. Wiggin ‘57. MUSE brings song, service, and spirit to under served audiences, especially those in nursing homes.

This special benefit concert will feature current and former MUSE singers, including Founder Paul Wiggin, Duane Sullivan with Forever Plaid, Jane Hively with the Celtic Mountain Streams Music, Elyse O’Connor, Maddie Sifantus and others. A highpoint will be the awarding of the first Paul W. Wiggin Scholarship to a qualified seminarian.
