Site Description

The Congregational Church of Somersville is a relatively small (150 members) exurban church about 20 minutes southeast of Springfield, MA. Somersville is an old mill village (the mill is now abandoned) located within the town of Somers, CT. Somers is becoming increasingly wealthy as more and more exurban professionals build big homes on large plots of land. The town still enjoys many working farms, too. Most farms in town specialize in shade tobacco, flowers, or horses. The state has a huge prison complex located in our town and the neighboring one, so a lot of folks have a tie within their families to the correctional system, too.Our church is growing in faith, finances, and membership, which is very exciting and heartening! We are the "second" congregational church in town; the other is about 4 times our size and it is the traditionally monied church in town. Our "second" church status really gives us the freedom to be who God is calling us to be! We don't have to live up to others' expectations of what the Congregational Church in town ought to be like the Somers Center church needs to fret over that! For example, nearly three years ago our Somersville church went out and called an openly gay pastor with great enthusiasm while the Somers Congregational Church is still bogged down in contentious Open and Affirming discussions.Right now, the church is really focusing on missions, music and Christian education for both children and adults. We are blessed to have many motivated people who are trying to expand our ministries in each of these areas; we are building on past strengths. We are exploring a $100,000 capital campaign to stoke some possible areas of ministry growth as well as fix some nagging problems with parking. All told, the energy in the church is good, and both the pastor and congregation are ready to hear fresh voices in our worship and programs. That's why we are excited about the prospect of having an intern from Andover Newton! Hope to hear from you!

Student Involvement

There are many opportunities for growth in ministry at the Congregational Church of Somersville. By and large, the members and friends of the church are open and excited about exploring them, too, so our specific expectations of the intern candidate are quite flexible and negotiable. In terms of some specific ideas for intern-led ministry, our church has talked about engaging her/him in: starting an annual or semi-annual weekend retreat program, coordinating an outdoor ministry for our outdoorsy types, leading women's spirituality programs, helping plan and organize our upcoming capital campaign, beginning a liturgical dance troupe, and, naturally, participating regularly in leading worship in the congregation. Of course, we wouldn't expect a field ed student to do all of that just what fits with his or her gifts, graces and passions. We're also open to mining our intern's gifts, graces and passions for programs and ministries we haven't even envisioned yet!

Commitment to Educating Ministers

We have a committed group of lay leaders who are interested in sharing wisdom from their many years of ministry in our church. Our church pastor is currently engaged in a leadership development program with the American Management Association that focuses on the importance of mentoring and coaching skills. Together, we will make a strong team committed to a field education student's growth. Also, there is a great deal of openness within the congregation to receiving what an intern may have to offer us in terms of new ideas.

Special Considerations

We believe we are interested in an off-site supervisor for at least the first year of our involvement in the program.
