Site Description

As a federated church, United Church of Christ and United Methodist Church, an intern would be afforded the myriad blessings associated with ministering in this wonderful and unique situation. We are a church of about 150 members in a sweet quintessential Cape Cod village. Our church sits in the heart of the village and functions like a community center since we host much of the town’s vibrant life. One of our most wonderful qualities is our economic, theological and political diversity. Our members range from fishermen and teachers to retired engineers and executives. We have people who would claim Jesus as Lord and Savior and people who simply want to do what he did and live how he lived. We have active lesbian members although we have not yet begun the conversation about becoming Open and Affirming and Reconciling. In the past year, we have become more diverse in our age range as more young families are starting to claim the Cotuit Federated Church as their spiritual home. Like much of the Cape, we are primarily Caucasian with a few exceptions.

Student Involvement

An intern would be invited to forge his or her own ministry given the passions of the individual and the needs of this community. Preaching monthly during Sunday worship, leading occasional worship at the local nursing home, visiting people as needed and leading adult education would be the foundation of the intern’s experience. Further ministry responsibilities would be established based on the interests of the intern.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

We called a new pastor in the summer of 2007 and many members have stepped forward to follow God with new energy. The congregation is extremely flexible and is open to experimenting in worship, which is a special blessing to someone seeking to grow in worship leadership. We sing traditional hymns, with some Beatles and Joan Osborne mixed in. Out of this holy energy, emerged our desire to invite a seminarian to join what God is doing here and to prepare for ministry in a vibrant and fun setting like ours. We would welcome the opportunity to form and be formed by a person who is right in the middle of preparing to pastor a community of faith. The core of our mission and vision is found in the book of Isaiah. “Here We Are Lord!” serves our foundation, along with our core values, which are compassion, faith and community.
