Site Description

The Eliot Church is an ecumenical/interfaith congregation affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and the United Church of Christ (UCC). We are located in Natick Massachusetts about nine miles from Andover Newton Theological School. We are a theologically liberal community and an "Open and Affirming" congregation of the UCC. We are a suburban congregation of about 130 adult members. Our average weekly attendance is fifty-four Adults and Children. Age distribution is fairly even from people in their mid 30's to their 70's and 80's. We have a large number of families with children and some single adults. We have an experienced staff that is looking forward to working with a Field Education student! This year we have had a full-time Intern and have the systems in place to support and promote a learning/serving environment. Currently the staff consists of a full-time pastor, Rev. Dr. Adam Tierney-Eliot who has fourteen years of experience as a parish minister and has spent the last eleven of these as the minister at Eliot Church. We also have a part-time Church Administrator, Felicia Nadel, who has worked at the church for about six years. Our Music Director, Dr. Stephen James is a composer and music teacher. He has served in this capacity off and on for the better part of two decades. His current stint has been for over twelve years.Over the past decade our congregation (like many congregations) has worked to find ways to respect tradition while also addressing the world around us in new and creative ways. This can be seen in our worship, our service projects, and in our religious education programming. We hope to continue this experiment and experience in the future!

Stipend Expectation

Student Involvement

There are many opportunities for a student to participate in the life of Eliot Church. We are looking for someone willing to work with our congregation and our pastor to engage in all aspects of the ministry of our congregation. This includes areas such as preaching, pastoral care, service, and administration. In addition, our Religious Education program is of particular interest to the congregation and, therefore, we would expect any candidate to be a willing participant and leader in this part of our church life. Our hope is to find someone who is willing to walk with us as we continue to explore what it means to be a congregation in this modern era. This is a period in which holds a great deal of potential as well as a fair number of challenges for the church. We are looking forward to the fresh perspective that a student can bring. For further information we can put you in touch with our current Full-Time Intern who will be leaving the position in the spring.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

The Eliot Church has made the decision to become a Teaching Congregation for a variety of reasons. One of these is that we feel we would benefit from the new and fresh insights that such a process can bring. However, we also feel that we have a great deal to offer. We see this as a ministry to the larger church. We feel that we can contribute to its future health by helping to train qualified clergy for settlement in its congregations. We also have something to give. A student who works with us will have the chance to participate in a unique community on a journey toward discovering what it means to be both liberal and Christian. In addition, our size is such that there are plenty of opportunities for a student to participate in the full range of activities that engage the parish minister.

Special Considerations

The Eliot Church (as mentioned previously) is both Unitarian Universalist and a member of the United Church of Christ. We are very comfortable with students from either denomination/association and are familiar with the requirements of each.

Comments

We are very excited about the possibility of a Field Education placement here at Eliot. We are a congregation that includes many seekers on a quest for greater understanding of the world around us. We also have many educators (professional and amateur) in our community. We truly see this as an opportunity to play to the strengths of our church. If you are interested, please feel free to reach out and ask more questions. We would love to get to know you!
