Keynote Speaker

Carolyn Roberts is a proud graduate of Andover Newton Theological School. She received an M.A. in Theological Research in 2008. Currently, she is completing her PhD at Harvard University in the Department of African and African American Studies. Her dissertation, "To Heal and to Harm: Medicine, Knowledge, and Power in the Atlantic Slave Trade," is the first full-length study of the history of medicine in the British slave trade. Carolyn’s journey now brings her to Yale along with her beloved alma mater Andover Newton. Carolyn was recently appointed to a joint faculty position in the History Department’s Program in the History of Science and Medicine and African American Studies. The daughter of pastor Dr. Wesley A. Roberts, Carolyn’s home church is Peoples Baptist Church in Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to returning to graduate school, Carolyn worked as an actor in New York City and nationally.
