Site Description

The First Baptist Church in Needham is a church that loves, welcomes and seeks the will of God in all that we do. We are a small congregation located approximately four miles from Andover Newton Theological School. We are a church in transition, seeking ways to be active followers of Jesus Christ. We are a congregation of faithful individuals who are endeavoring to deepen our own faith, while helping others to do the same. Our mission and desire is to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord by:• Loving, supporting and serving each other, the community and the world, welcoming all people to find a spiritual home that embraces the joy of Christian fellowship, mission and service;• Finding God’s vision through personal and collective prayer and freedom of personal interpretation of the word and• Providing the opportunity for people to grow spiritually in Christ.Because of our transitional stage, we offer many educational ministry opportunities for field education students. These ministries include education (adult, children and youth), hospitality and fellowship (outreach to homebound, hospitalized members and visitors), mission and outreach, administration, and worship. Demographically, our membership is approximately 100 members with 50 attending an average worship service. We are affiliated with The American Baptist Churches USA; The American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts (TABCOM). Ethnically, we are 85% Caucasian, 13% African American, and 2% Asian. The fastest growing ethnic segment of the congregation is African American. From a socio-economic standpoint, the congregation is predominantly middle to upper middle class. The average age of the congregation is in the sixties. Our worship service tends toward traditional with a move to the blended service. We are attempting to incorporate more praise and worshipful singing, while also holding the needs of an older congregation that appreciates the traditional hymnody of the church.

Student Involvement

While the church is committed to working with students to shape a meaningful learning experience, we are interested in students who seek a leadership role in educational ministries. This is not simply a "make the student handle youth group" type of role. We are in the midst of piloting an innovative reorganizational model and we value the ideas that come from fresh minds and outside sources. In addition to helping us shape the educational ministries, a student here has the opportunity to work with the pastor to participate in all aspects of the ministry and within the church structure, including worship service leadership and several opportunities to preach. We seek to help students form fully into the pastors that God has called to lead the church. Our student will have ample time each week with the pastor as well as a time for monthly meetings with the TPC.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Our goals as a church are to win souls for Jesus Christ and foster the spiritual deepening of our membership. As such, having a ministerial candidate allows us to extend our reach into the community to share the gospel of Jesus Christ and invite people into Christian discipleship.

Special Considerations

The church is within walking distance of the commuter rail lines. Weekend bus transportation to nearby Newton stops is available. Members of the church will gladly work with students to coordinate rides as necessary.
