Site Description

First Church in Marlborough is a growing congregation of around 215 members, with approx. 100 in attendance on regular Sundays and over 120 during Communion Sundays. While primarily an Anglo congregation, in the recent few years we have been blessed by a number of international and mixed couples (Africa, Latin America) who joined our congregation. Having said that - we are not multicultural yet - but getting there. Church members are made up of folks of modest means, many with middle management positions. We have members who represent every decade of life from birth to 100. More folks over 55 than under, but we also have around 40 children in Sunday School and a growing number of young families. There is a wide range of theological and political perspectives. Liturgy is very important and we are on the high end spectrum of worship practice in the UCC, but we spice it up with our rock worship ban "Covenant" as well as our bell choir Joyful Ringers. In the next few years we are want to focus on spiritual growth and mission and outreach, on our identity as a church in Marlborough and how can we best minister to the town in our next 350 years.Marlborough is near the intersection of 495 and the Mass Pike. Within in a radius of five mile there is a population of 100,000 with only a few functioning mainline Protestant churches. There is a great opportunity for growth.

Stipend Expectation

This site does not meet the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

We imagine having a student and the teaching parish set a direction based on the gifts and creative ideas of the student. Some possible areas of interest for the student to consider include: working with families of children under age 4 (adults in the 20-30s); some coordination of youth programs; spiritual support for teachers of the Sunday School; overseeing and leading of one of the Sunday School centers; leadership of Bible Study or spiritual practice groups; regular preaching (once a month) and leading worship; servant evangelism work; expanding our outreach and mission opportunity.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

We are a congregation that historically had a field education student, but has not done so for some years.

Comments

While we cannot provide for a full stipend we could probably discuss transport costs and other ways to make sure that preparing for ordination in Word and Sacrament is not a burden but a joy to both the student and the congregation.
