Site Description

First Church in Pembroke is an open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ. In general, our theological outlook is liberal (though individual beliefs run the spectrum) and our social consciousness is progressive. We are located 55 minutes from ANTS in the beautiful town of Pembroke on the south shore (a few minutes from Duxbury and Marshfield beaches). We also take great joy in being a community church and take advantage of the opportunity to reach out to many local agencies, as well as support physically and financially such "good works" as Habitat for Humanity, the West Virginia Work Camp, Partners in Health, to name a few. We also support the general mission fund of the UCC, Our church World Mission and reach out to various shelters and food pantries in the area. We have a excellent Christian Education program that ministers to youth of all ages, from our crib room to our senior high youth group. We operate a daily nursery school and let older youth try out first hand each summer, an important program to the life of our church, the West Virginia Work Camp. There, young people rebuild the homes of the poor and gather in the evening to discuss the nature of poverty and how our faith can make a difference locally and systemically. Our church is also involved in the Stephen Ministry program that provides one to one peer counseling for members of the community as well as the members of First Church. First Church is truly a historic church, and was organized 300 years ago. From this site, before the Declaration of Independence was written and communicated to the colonies, the Pembroke Resolves called for separation from Britain. It was drafted and approved by the community of faith occupying this building and by local farmers and sent to the king of England. We were also one of the first churches in New England to boast having a woman serving in the pulpit. We try to carry through with our heritage in this century, unafraid to speak truth to power and to take a role in public life. Our covenant, embedded with our by-laws, calls on the members to enact "justice, peace and righteousness" for the sake of God's reign. We are glad to have others join us in this journey of faith.

Student Involvement

Our pastor was a student at Andover Newton and participated in Field Education, finding it a most rewarding experience. One of the reasons that was so, was because he was able to participate in a full range of pastoral duties and responsibilities. It is our aim as members of the TPSC. to create this experience for a student serving First Church in Pembroke. Here, a student may preach the requisite number of times, visit members, hospitals, nursing homes, attend and take leadership at committee meetings, discussion groups and help lead a youth group. We are hopeful that among this menu of pastoral opportunities, a student may use their gifts and find and strengthen their growing edge and discover the care and support of others in the process. We will be respectful of our agreement to not overburden a student, but will give them ample access to the full range of pastoral duties. It is also hoped that a student might take a co-leadership role with one of our youth fellowships and help support the next generation of faithful Christians.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

We do feel a sense of responsibility in nurturing the next generation of religious leaders and believe we can offer a realistic sense of the nature of pastoral care and leadership. We hope to contribute to the overall experience of preparation of United Church of Christ pastors as they endeavor to lead our vibrant denomination. The overarching educational philosophy of our parish is to enrich and strengthen one another's gifts for the purpose of extending the reach of God's love, peace and justice/righteousness upon the earth.
