Site Description

First Congregational Church in Norwood is a pastoral-sized church in south-suburban Boston. In many ways, the church itself is responsible for the town's origin serving as the focal point, starting in 1736, until the town's relatively late incorporation in 1872.Over time, the church's influence waned as Western-European immigration brought a significant number of Irish and Italian Catholics to the area. Demographically, the town is overwhelmingly (>90%) Catholic. This has shaped the church in many ways, not the least of which is an inward-looking quality. The church prides itself on American virtues honed in the mid-twentieth century civic responsibility, knowing and taking care of one's neighbor, being responsible citizens. While there is certainly overlap between these "virtues" and the Christian way of life, the lines tend to get blurred. There is always a changing-of-the-guard, work-in-progress quality to communities. At present, First Congregational Church is nearing a tipping point. The "old guard" is aging; there is no sizeable middle group, no large cohort of Baby Boomers to take their place. In their stead, there is a generation, in their late thirties and early forties, moving into positions of responsibility and leadership. The "old guard" and the upcoming generation actually work quite well together. But it cannot be overlooked that the upcoming generation is time-starved. They are dual-career couples with children in school and subject to all the demands that implies. This is a wilderness period for mainline Protestantism; and this is something which First Congregational Church "gets." There is an understanding that change is to be embraced not because the church is going out of business. First Congregational Church is relatively healthy financially. Change is to be embraced to find vitality.

Student Involvement

Very simply, the life of the church. This is, as mentioned above, a pastoral church. The pastor is more or less in touch with all aspects of the church from preaching and creating liturgy to waiting for the oil man when the burner is on the fritz. We think it is imperative that our student is not pigeonholed. In fact, we think this is one thing of extraordinary value that we can offer a pastoral candidate. On any given day, there can be visiting the sick, talking to the troubled, preparing a sermon, meeting with a committee, leading a Bible study group, working with confirmands, or simply going to a Little League game where several of the church families are gathered. We strive, here, to merge the sacred and the secular. We strive not to take ourselves too seriously, but to seriously attend to our responsibilities. We feel that a ministerial candidate has the latitude, here, to explore as many aspects of ministry as his/her gifts allow.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

First Congregational Church has had a hiatus from seminarians for more than a decade. While that may seem disadvantageous, quite the opposite is the case. There is an enthusiasm around our becoming a Teaching Parish Site which has generated considerable interest in the congregation and, immediately, a number of talented people interested in being on the Teaching Parish Committee. The commitment to educating ministers is in the DNA of this congregation; it never left. It simply begins again with new energy.
