Site Description

The First Congregational Church of Stoughton, United Church of Christ, is an Open and Affirming suburban congregation of approximately 112 members. We maintain a strong affiliation with the UCC, with our pastor and members involved in Pilgrim Association, Massachusetts Conference, and national activities. We average approximately 75 in our one Sunday morning worship service. Our congregation spans the age spectrum from preschoolers to nonagenarians. Although predominantly Caucasian, we also have African American and Asian members as well as bi-racial and gay couples. UCC Stoughton is currently participating in the Crossroads/New Beginnings Assessment Program to help us discern our strengths and passions and to be part of what God is calling us to be in the future. UCC Stoughton is a discipleship church, with the purpose of "Forming Disciples ~ Transforming Lives." Our focus is to help people develop and nurture their relationship with God through Christ, and – to that end – we offer opportunities for Christian service and spiritual development, including small groups, bible studies, and hands-on mission opportunities. Our approximately 10 school-age children begin worship in the sanctuary and then go to their workshop rotation classes after the children’s message (“A Time for All”) or, on the first Sunday of the month, after participating in Holy Communion. We have an active Youth Group and will be putting together a Confirmation class in the fall of 2015. Our Vision: We are called together to embrace God’s transformation of our lives and our world by becoming and serving as Christ’s disciples. Our Mission: Our mission is to form disciples of Christ and transform our lives, and the lives of others, through Christ. We do this by nurturing our relationship with God through the spiritual practices of daily prayer, weekly worship, daily bible reading, serving within and beyond our church, developing spiritual relationships, and giving generously.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

The First Congregational Church of Stoughton, United Church of Christ, was a Teaching Parish during the 25-year pastorate of Rev. Ernest O. Geigis (1970-1995), and the congregation fondly remembers many of the students who served here. In 2008-09, after a 17-year hiatus, through the efforts of former pastor Rev. Jean Niven Lenk, our church re-committed – with enthusiasm and dedication – to the important mission of educating new ministers for service to God and Christ’s Church. We have enjoyed a renewed partnership with Andover Newton, and serving as a Field Education Site is considered to be one of the church’s major outreach ministries. Rev. Mary L. Perry, our pastor since April, 2013, is a 2012 graduate of ANTS, and her Field Ed experience was integral to her formation as a pastor. She is committed to providing a seminary student the same kind of opportunities for learning that she herself was given.
