Site Description

The First Congregational Church of Vernon has been a gathered community of faith for 254 years with many special activities. Vernon is a Town of approximately 29,000 people located east of Hartford. It is a mostly middle class community with mixed racial and ethnic backgrounds. Our staff includes a Senior Pastor, a Director of Christian Education, a Minister of Visitation, a Choir Director (soon to be an ordained Minister of Music), an Organist, and a part time office secretary. Music is a vital and indispensable part of our spiritual life. Besides the Senior Choir there is a Handbell Choir and a children's choir. We view ourselves as a congregation of "ministers". We are perceived in the community as a Church committed to outreach and missions. We believe our Church is a wonderful learning site for a student. In the past, three of our own members have entered the ministry. We have approximately 320 members, with weekly Sunday attendance averaging 120. Our Sunday School has about 25 children. We hold a weekly "Theology on Tap" gathering (open to the community) at a local restaurant and have a weekly Bible study group.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

Field placement students have a wide range of opportunities in our Church. They can participate and serve in any program including all activities listed above. Historically our students have participated in all parts of the worship service including sermons, children's messages, communion, confirmation preparation, women's fellowship and retreats, adult Bible Study, Choir, Diaconate, Council, visitations, Men's Breakfast, Lenten series, Lenten Services, Thanksgiving Service, Easter Vigil and Sunrise Service. Our Church is open to a student using their own gifts and experimenting with new formats (examples-a musical sermon, preaching from the floor of the Church-not the pulpit, using puppets for children's message, AIDS programs for our youth, etc).Because our services are recorded and made available on our web site, students and supervisors can view their participation in Sunday worship .

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Two support groups meet regularly at the Church. We have a weekly Support Group for those who have recently, or in the past, lost a loved one and we have a Mind and Spirit Support Group for those challenged by mental health issues. Missions projects include the following: Boy & Girl Scout troops meet at our Church, we deliver an average of 70 Thanksgiving family baskets annually and over 150 children receive Christmas gifts from us. In the spring we restock the TriTown food pantry located in Vernon and prepare meals on a monthly basis at the Cornerstone shelter. We regularly collect food for the local Soup Kitchen. Our Women's Fellowship is currently supporting a family in the neighboring elementary school. We also have a prayer shawl ministry. We have a newly established Memorial Garden next to the Church. We have a Call Network which provides rides and services for those members in crisis or in need. We are in the process of establishing a Stephen's Ministry and are in the process of formally becoming Open and Affirming. Our Parish Nursing Program provides health information and periodic blood pressure screening. Fellowship ministries include Women's Fellowship, Men's Tuesday Morning Breakfast, Evening Circle and a monthly Women's Luncheon.

Special Considerations

We use an off site supervisor assigned by ANTS. Our church provides handicapped access via an elevator and special handicapped parking.

Comments

It is worth noting that we have been a Teaching Parish for 20 years. During this time we have had 10 students, 8 of whom have been ordained. Our most recent student will graduate from ANTS in May 2016 and we look forward to her ordination. Five of our students requested and continued on to have a successful second year of field placement at FCCV. Our Teaching Parish Committee consists of 5 enthusiastic and committed members of which 2 have served continuously since 1996 and 3 have been trained on site at Andover Newton. We have a congregation that is very supportive of this ministry. Despite periodic Church financial difficulties, they have always voted to continue this mission and ministry. We were honored in May 2002 when we received an award from ANTS because of our work as a teaching parish. We are happy to be a part of the ANTS process of preparing new pastors.
