Site Description

First Congregational Church, UCC of Whitman is an church community with a strong focus on reaching out into the world. We have 200+ active members and an average weekly attendance of 115 with an active Sunday school, youth group and adult Bible study programs. The Mission of the First Congregational Church, UCC of Whitman is to welcome all in common worship and celebration of God’s love; to hear the word of God and put it into action through the education of children, youth, and adults. In order to encourage faith and Christian living in an ever-changing world, we seek opportunities to provide a nurturing presence of care, love, and healing. We gather together with the understanding that each person is entrusted with special gifts to develop and grow in God’s service in the local and world community.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

Student will engage in many aspects in the life of the church. The specific tasks of the Student will be mutually agreed up depending on the student's experience, interests and background as well as the needs of the Minister and the Church. Expectations of the student include: a strong interest in parish ministry and religious education, readiness to give of self to others, ability to respect confidences, genuine caring and respect for others. Student ministers participate in Sunday and other worship services and ecumenical events, assist in weddings and funerals as situations permit, prepare and lead three to five worship services, visit parishioners with the pastor and later alone in homes, hospitals, and nursing homes, co-teach confirmation, as well as attend a few Board meetings, visit Church School classes and help with youth ministry occasionally. We encourage students to bring their special talents and interests to the congregation.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Our church has been a teaching parish for student, off and on (mostly on), for over 60 years. The Teaching Parish Committee, the Pastor, and the congregation provide opportunities for the student minister to experience almost all aspects of church life and to develop a personal style of ministry. Student ministers are members of the church staff, whose stipend in recent years has been funded through an endowment fund (see comments). The Pastor meets weekly and the TPC meets monthly with the student to assist or support her or him in any possible way. We invite interested students to contact us!

Special Considerations

The church is less than an hour from the seminary (45 minutes on a Sunday morning). Whitman is on the commuter rail line that goes to and from Boston and Plymouth and Kingston.
