Site Description

Ours is a community church on the Commons of a rural village. Through a process entered into three years ago, our church family has identified teaching and ministering to our youth as our number one priority. We are pleased with our continuing progress in Christian education, activities and programs for our youth. The church typically has more than two dozen youngsters enrolled in primary and junior Sunday School classes. Nursery care is provided during worship. We have a two year confirmation class of enthusiastic young people ages 12-14. Each confirmand has an adult mentor with whom to work, learn and build a close relationship. The Youth Group usually has about 20 members with an active outreach program that includes helping the needy, learning about other religions, working with nearby church youth groups, retreats, and having fun together. Our Church membership of 120 reflects the age distribution and economic and vocational diversity of our community. Among our Church family, 45% are retired or semi-retired and 40% are active professionals, own a business or work at clerical jobs. About 5% are students, 5% are from farming families and the remainder are disabled or under-employed. Among our families 23% have children in the home and 7% are single parented. In addition to their commitment to our church's mission and work, many of our members are actively involved in the community through participating in town initiatives and organizations. Our church has an active Women's Fellowship. Its members raise funds through suppers, fairs, Christmas bazaars, and other means, to provide mission work locally and around the world. These include food baskets for the needy, camp tuition for youth, hospice programs, and Church World Service efforts. It also helps stock and equip the parish hall's kitchen.

Student Involvement

We offer to work with the Student Pastor in every area of church and community life. We will develop a plan together that draws upon the interests of the student, while emphasizing the places where learning cannot otherwise be accomplished, except through direct experience. Since the members live out their commitment to Christ in these ways, the Student Pastor can expect to participate in Sunday worship from the gathering through the coffee hour which follows worship; work with one or more Boards or Committees; participate in an adult Bible study; visit with members in their homes; and, attend bazaars, dinners, and other scheduled events with us. We hope that the Student Pastor's growing familiarity with the church members will lead to increasing involvement with youth activities, worship, education with youth and adults, visitation, pastoral care and community participation. We know that the Student Pastor will bring fresh thinking and new ideas.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

A few years ago, a refugee family from Eastern Europe came to live in the church parsonage. During their year with us, almost everyone was involved with the family members in one way or another. The church membership was learning how to accomplish such things as they were happening, as the refugee family began to learn to find work and schools for each person, learn to speak English, learn to drive a car, and so much more. Our commitment to the mission of educating ministers comes partly from that experience and partly from our love of education. In uncovering how to follow Christ in this rural village, we believe that this is a ministry that will be embraced by all of us. It will enrich and educate us all, because of the ever new, including the never anticipated, challenges such an undertaking brings.

Special Considerations

As there is no public transportation, the Student Pastor will need the use of a motor vehicle.
