Site Description

1825 sanctuary, 1717 congregation, up-to-date in most respects. We are a lively, friendly and committed congregation of about 100 members and 20+ more people who are always around but haven't signed the book. GREAT Religious Education program with supportive parents and a creative and engaged DRE. Need a little more youth programming - minister is working on this. In an area ripe for congregational expansion. A fair-share congregation committed to the values and principles of UUism. 43 minutes from Providence rail station, 26 minutes from Boston South Station by local commuter rail; 2 local commuter rail stations. Located near the I93/I95 split.Bedroom community, diverse and historical. Superb teaching congregation - open to new ideas and loves challenges. Music program/director versatile, talented and open to suggestions, very capable - able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.Minister has 28 years of experience in small congregations, willing to share and make available all opportunities for ministry with intern.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

A part-time, 2-year internship for a UU student & candidate for ministerial fellowship. Intern will independently conduct one Sunday worship service/month (10 in all), participate in all other Sunday services in consultation with the settled minister. May conduct all non-member weddings & memorial services and participate in member weddings & memorial services. Visiting, counseling and other aspects of settled ministry will be available, first through accompanying the settled minister and then on his/her own. Intern will be welcome at, but not required to attend, all committee meetings. He/she should attend a minimum of one meeting of each committee of the congregation per year, and 8 out of 10 Parish Committee meetings. Mileage will be paid for all travel except commuting travel. Expenses will be reimbursed at a rate to be negotiated with the Parish Committee. Intern will be given ample opportunity to offer separate services (e.g. contemporary, lectio divina, vespers, etc.) as schedule allows.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

First Parish UU - Canton wants to offer a person seeking ordination in UU parish ministry all possible chances to experience the fullness of ministry under the gentle yet firm guidance of its experienced minister. The most important thing the intern should know is that this congregation understands that people begin without a lot of experience or knowledge of the realities "on the ground" and we are willing to guide, support, encourage and teach the intern. We ask for an intern because we want to be generative, not to get an extra worker. It's good for us to have an intern because we believe in growth, connection and service. This is a way we can serve our greater association, by giving seminarians the chance to serve a congregation that will teach, encourage, support and celebrate his or her formation in his or her calling to ministry.

Special Considerations

First Parish UU - Canton is committed to complying with the intern's UUA requirements wherever possible. We are a flexible and understanding group of people dedicated to providing a learning opportunity for a candidate for the UU ministry in good standing with his or her seminary and the UUA.

Comments

A total of $5,000 is budgeted - $3,000 for salary and $2,000 for expenses. To be fine-tuned at contract time.
