Site Description

First Parish of Chelmsford is a Unitarian Universalist Welcoming Congregation of 200+ members, with a large religious education program, an intergenerational music program, and growing social outreach ministries. While it is a suburban church, we are close to the city of Lowell, and draw our membership from the region around us. We have an economic and class diversity not always found in UU congregations. The congregation is growing and healthy. Over the last ten years, we have created and put into place a congregational covenant, which we use with the UUA Covenant, to ground our UU identity and put our faith into action. We have good partnerships between lay and professional leaders. We are not rich but have a history of healthy giving, and have two cell towers that allow us to put funds toward programs and ministries that we otherwise might not be able to support. We have both the gift and the burden of an historic building. We are the oldest congregation in the town and have a unique relationship with our larger community. Our building is in constant use by groups from within and beyond our congregation, including a weekly community supper, Table of Plenty, and a weekly Buddhist meditation group. At the same time, we bear the costs of maintaining an old building within the confines of the historic district commission requirements, and are currently struggling with how to make our building accessible and more welcoming. In the last four years, we have added a Sunday evening circle worship service in our chapel, and are currently exploring how to grow the spirit of this service. Our areas for growth include accessibility, more intentional inclusion and mentoring of new members and leaders, ministering to a growing young adult community, and continuing to grow our social outreach ministries.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

The student would be and could be involved in the aspects of congregational life that they feel they most need to experience to grow in their own ministry. We have found with our past students that regular participation in worship and religious education offer the student the best opportunities to get to know members of the congregation, and then get involved in pastoral care, rites of passage, and other aspects of ministry. Attending staff meetings and board meetings would give the student a background in administration and the day-to-day running of a church. There are also areas to explore any specific interests: social outreach, developing membership and UU religious identity through our new member and leadership mentoring programs, our growing youth programs, and our pastoral care team.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

First Parish has had four successful ministerial internships, and continues to express an excitement and commitment to having students. We enjoy having the diversity of voices. We see having student ministers as a way to contribute to the health and development of our larger Unitarian Universalist faith. We believe we have a lot to offer a student in terms of a healthy, caring, and honest teaching site, who is also willing to learn from the student.

Special Considerations

Students would need a car to get to Chelmsford.
