Site Description

First Parish in Wayland, first gathered in 1640, stands in the center of this town of about 13,000 people, about 15 miles west of Boston. With 350 adult members and about 220 children, the congregation is vibrant, active, and engaged. We are a multi-staff church moving from a two-minister staffing model to one minister, a full-time ministerial intern, and a full-time Director of Lifespan Religious Education (a change from our current half-time Director of Religious Education focused solely on elementary RE). Enhancing Community Life has been a recent focus, resulting in more and more diverse opportunities for parishioners and other community members to come together outside of Sunday mornings to learn, work or simply have fun together. We recently launched a capital campaign, which will continue into the 2011 church year, whose goals are to strengthen the endowment, build additional space for youth and adult activities, and replace our organ, which supports our highly regarded music program. We are a Welcoming Congregation and working toward recognition as a Green Sanctuary. We have active Social Action programs for adults and youth, and are supporters of the UU Urban Ministry.

Student Involvement

A ministerial intern at First Parish in Wayland participates in every aspect of congregational life in a professional capacity, in a team that includes a long-time minister experienced in supervising interns. The congregation has a long tradition of accepting interns in a professional role, including helpful, supportive Intern Committees. An intern is expected to attend all of the monthly meetings of the governing board (the Parish Committee), as well as the monthly meetings of the minister, intern, and the Parish Committee chair, at least one meeting with every other congregational committee, and every meeting of a select number of committees for which they serve as prime support (often the Newcomer and/or the Community Life Committees). The intern is involved in many Sunday morning worship services, and leads about five in the course of the year. The intern as well as the minister attends the monthly meetings of the congregation's Lay Ministers, and shares in the schedule of visitations to hospitals, to shut-ins, and to older and newer members. The intern interacts with the Director of Lifespan Religious Education; delivers the intergenerational part of the Sunday service on occasion; and spends at least one Sunday each attending the Sunday school classes and observing all of one class led by a highly-regarded leader. The intern interacts with the Coordinator of Youth Programs, and becomes known to and by the members of the youth programs. The intern meets weekly with the supervising minister, monthly with the Intern Committee, and twice a month with the full staff.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

First Parish has a long and successful history as a teaching church, having supported eighteen ministerial interns in the past decades. The current senior minister has been supervisor to the last seventeen, beginning with an Andover Newton student in the mid 1970s, at which time he took a year-long course on supervision at the school. The congregation has always been pleased and proud of its role as a teaching parish, and service on the Intern Committee has always been welcomed by those who have served.

Comments

The placement is a full-time ministerial internship. The compensation will be $1400 a month.
