Site Description

Franklin Federated is a growing church on the common in Franklin, Massachusetts, minutes from Foxborough and Wrentham. We are part of the 495 Corridor, so we are a solidly suburban setting. Our church is a federation of the First Baptist and First Congregational Churches of Franklin, so we are part of the United Church of Christ and American Baptist Churches, USA. For many years, the town of Franklin was known for farms and mills. Italian families came in droves and helped to build a vibrant community. St. Mary's Church is one of the largest Catholic communities in Massachusetts, but there are strong Protestant roots here too. A population explosion in the early 1990's brought in thousands of folks, and public services and infrastructure rushed to catch up. Franklin Federated Church has been described by members as a "sleeping giant," a church that had a formidable place in the town's early history, but felt sidelined through the turn of the century. Now Rev. Charley Eastman and a committed congregation of lay folk are working to turn that trend around. Membership is up, pledges are up, and we're working with a more blended worship style. Weekly attendance has hovered between 120 and 150, up from around 70 a few years ago. The church experienced a deeply productive interim with Rev. Vicki Hammel before Charley came on as pastor. The members of Franklin Federated are warm, honest, and thoughtful. They come to their faith and their worship with joy and humility. They have worked hard and are rising to new challenges. This is a community of hope. It is a community of potential.

Stipend Expectation

Student Involvement

The students involvement should be driven by the student's goals and the needs of the parish. We will help you find your fit here. The only "No" that we offer is that you not come here to lead a youth group. That program needs support and is in flux at the moment, but we don't want someone to make deep investments and then disappear, leaving youth feeling abandoned. If you do have a heart for youth ministry, then please note that this coming year will be an Affirmation (Confirmation/Baptism) year for us, and you would be more than welcome to participate in that program, which has a beginning, middle, and end. You would have opportunities to preach and lead other aspects of worship, to attend meetings and start projects and initiatives. Franklin Federated has needs in most ways small churches have needs. Let's get together and talk about what you want and have to offer.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

The regeneration of the church is as vital in relation to ordained folks as lay folks. We are committed to raising up the next generation of leaders who will help shape where the churches head in this brave new world of ours. Ministry as we know it will look very different, but human need is constant. We seek to help equip the called. With God's assistance, we seek to help you deepen your faith and find your vocation. As much as we respect the work done at Andover Newton, there is nothing like the experience of training in a parish setting. This is where love and truth collide. We look forward to meeting you here.

Special Considerations

Obviously anyone coming from ANTS will need a car, unless they live on the Franklin line of the Commuter rail. Once here, you will need a car to do any level of visitation or working with various groups of folks. FFC is currently involved in the Open and Affirming (UCC) and Welcoming and Affirming (ABC-USA) processes. The Welcome and Affirming Church Team is overseeing this, and we expect to be well on our way by the time our next student arrives in the fall of 2012. You don't have to make this part of your goals, but it's important for you to know it's going on. Remember: since we can't choose "both" in the box above, we are both an American Baptist AND a United Church of Christ site.
