Site Description

The First Freewill Baptist Church of Smithfield, commonly known as Greenville Baptist Church (GBC), has been an active part of the surrounding community since 1820. The worship service is traditional, with some success using blended music; attendance averages 85-100. The congregation is predominately white (as is the neighborhood), with about 1/3 of the congregation over the age of 60, with a recent increase of young families. There are many opportunities to be involved in mission; a true passion of GBC. The church supports food pantries and soup kitchen, serving at a soup Kitchen in Central Falls on a Sunday afternoon every 4 – 6 weeks. The church runs a thrift shop that sells clothing and household item at low cost, and offers vouchers for people to get clothing for free. Whenever a great need is know – such as a family that has had a house fire – people are invited to take whatever they need. A member of GBC worked with ABCORI to attain a grant for the RETHINK IT program, a peace making initiative created in response to the alarming rise in teen violence. The program was developed by the youth in South Providence Neighborhood ministries and the church member helps promote the program and coordinates training. GBC also supports the San Miguel School in Providence, serving boys from 5th – 8th grade that come from impoverished families. In an ecumenical collaboration with the Local Roman Catholic and Lutheran Church, GBC has orchestrated fundraisers, coordinated site visitation, program enhancement and mentoring of the boys. GBC would be an effective learning environment for a student who desires to integrate theology with the daily interactions in ministry.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

The student would participate in worship weekly, leading various parts of the service and would be encouraged to preach every 4 – 6 weeks, according to student’s schedule. Accompany pastor on visitation of sick and shut-in; perhaps 2 or 3 times. Depending on student’s interest, she or he would be encouraged to attend Board or Committee meetings to better understand the organization and administration of the church and how it envisions ministry. Opportunities to be involved with youth, Christian Education, outreach and hands on mission, would be supported in accordance with the student’s learning objectives as stated in learning agreement.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

GBC recognizes the importance of training future ministers. Several lay and ordained ministers from its congregation have been trained and or attended seminary and have gone on to pastor other churches. A few of those who will serve on the Teaching parish committee have professional education as their background; all are committed to living their faith in day to day life. The pastor is a trained supervisor and has mentored new ministers in their first congregational setting. After discussion with various leaders in the church, it is agreed that the church would be a beneficial learning site for a student and would benefit itself from the teaching experience and student input.
