The First Church in Dedham is seeking a half-time Director of Religious Education to lead our healthy and growing religious education program beginning in September 2014. This is an acting position of one to two years and carries the possibility of becoming a permanent position.
The First Church in Dedham is a historic church located within a half-hour of Boston. We have a longstanding tradition of religious education; the first RE program was established at First Church in 1816. We currently have 160 members, with approximately 49 children registered in our RE program.
Our RE program has been led for the past five years by a aspiring DRE and before that for 18 years by a retiring half-time MRE. Our Children’s Religious Education Program is an active, integral part of our church community. Our current religious education program offers classes from nursery through grade 8, and youth group for both Middle and High School Students. We also offer “Coming of Age” and “Our Whole Lives, OWLS.”
Social action activities and inter-generational events are embedded in our program. Committed volunteers and an innovative team-teaching approach allows us to completely fill our teaching rosters year after year.
Adult religious education programs are important to many in our congregation and are planned in coordination with the Minister.
We are seeking a warm, caring, enthusiastic candidate with a bachelor’s degree or higher in education, child development, or a related field, and with some experience administering programs for children and youth. The desired candidate should have knowledge of UUA/RE resources, curriculum, and experience in working with volunteers. We seek a candidate who will enjoy working cooperatively with an RE committee and encouraging and supporting volunteers. The ideal candidate will communicate well with the parish minister, church staff, and families.
The professional we hire will lead the church school program, conduct occasional children’s worship, work with the RE committee to recruit, train, and support teachers, and select curriculum. This candidate will have the opportunity to work with the RE Committee and the congregation on evaluating our current program and visioning for the future.
First Church sits proudly in the center of Dedham. The church was founded in 1638, so it has a rich, varied history. Our congregation draws from a number of towns in the area. We are an active church with many varied interests and traditions. Dedham has direct train access to Boston, and its location provides easy highway access to New Hampshire and Cape Cod.
