Director of Music and Organist, Sharon, Massachusetts


The Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Director of Music and Organist is responsible for developing the overall music program of the parish. The Director of Music and Organist will provide leadership to and support for the parish vision, which emphasizes music as an integral component of liturgy and essential form of prayer, placing liturgy as central to our life as Catholics. In this capacity, the Director of Music and organist will work closely with the Parish Staff to bring this vision to fruition with an emphasis on development of a singing assembly/congregation. Reports to the Pastor.


  • Ensures appropriate music for all parish liturgical services.
  • Develop and direct the following choirs: children’s choir, adult choir, funeral choir, teen mass choir, special occasion choirs; including conducting rehearsals, recruitment of members, scheduling, and promotion of these opportunities to enhance liturgy.
  • Conduct choirs and provide music at liturgy on weekends and Holy Days.
  • Current schedule includes Saturday at 4:30 p.m., Sunday at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m., monthly Teen Mass at 5:00 p.m., with additional Masses and liturgies scheduled for Holy Week, Easter, Christmas, and Holy Days.
  • Work with cantor trainer to recruit, develop, train, and coordinate cantors.
  • Work with families and couples to plan appropriate liturgical music for weddings and funerals.
  • Develops assembly repertoire/weekly musical selections.
  • Participates in the planning and coordination of special seasonal and sacramental events with other staff members.
  • Participates actively as a member of the Pastoral Staff.
  • Participates actively as a member of the Parish Pastoral Council.
  • Prepares and administers the music budget.
  • Selects parish music resources.
  • Creates seasonal worship aids as needed.
  • Reports music reprint license use to appropriate vendors.
  • Develops parish musicians and hires professional musicians for holy days and special occasions and prepares their repertoire and arrangements.
  • Schedules cantors (or develops a volunteer to do so) and maintains choir library and parish musical resources (or develops a volunteer to do so).
  • Participates actively in community/parish events.
  • Participates actively in the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.
