Judy Swahnberg Named Lifetime Trustee
Class of '06 Alumna Was Board Chair 2010-14

The Board of Trustees at Andover Newton Theological School voted on Wednesday, June 10, to appoint past board chair the Rev. Judith L. Swahnberg a Lifetime Trustee of the nation’s first seminary and first graduate school.

The position honors Swahnberg’s years of service and deep commitment to Andover Newton. She has served as a Trustee since 2006 and was Chair of the Board from 2010-14, helping guide the school through a period of national economic crisis that saw other similarly sized institutions of theological education shut their doors.

"Sometimes, through dedication of vast amounts of time, energy, and financial resources a person becomes fundamental to the school's sustainability into the next generation,” said Board Chair the Rev. Dr. Jim Sherblom. “In electing Rev. Judy Swahnberg a Lifetime Trustee the Board of Trustees recognizes and honors Judy's passion and love for this school and all that she brings to us year after year."

“Judy’s devotion to Andover Newton is inspiring,” said Andover Newton President Martin B. Copenhaver. “To me, she is the model of servant leadership. She leads in powerful -- yet quiet -- ways, never calling attention to herself, always seeking to serve. Judy is also wise, which means a group always benefits from having her in the room. By giving this honor to Judy -- truly the highest honor a Trustee can be given -- we are saying that we want to continue to benefit from Judy’s wisdom for many years to come.”

The Rev. Swahnberg is Associate Minister at Wellesley Hills Congregational Church (UCC). She is an alumna of Wellesley College, Andover Newton (MDiv ’06), and the Simmons College Graduate School of Management.

The Rev. Swahnberg serves on the boards of the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare in Boston and the Philanthropic Council of the Developmental Medicine Center at Children’s Hospital in Boston. She is a former trustee of the Massachusetts Bible Society.
