LS121 Brushing Up on the New Testament

Description: Intended for teachers, preachers, and anyone else interested in an introductory (or brush up) course on the NT, this course will explore the history, themes, and literary devices used in the NT with a focus on the Gospels. We will explore the meaning of select texts, including intended audience, the historical background, and contemporary applications.

LS119 Teaching Peace and Justice with Children

Description: Participants will read and discuss resources aimed at helping children understand justice and advocacy, and to help parents raise children to be unbiased. Discussion will focus around such questions as: What can children at various stages understand about peace and justice? How can they be helped to value all persons? What is the role of parents? The role of the church?

Description: Learn the basics of Islamic history as well as understand how Muslims view their faith in a world context. Basic topics include learning about Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam; basic principles in Islam; Islam in the early period and it’s development; the difference between Sunni and Shi’i Islam; a guide to reading themes in the Qur’an and understanding the importance of the Qur’an to the Islamic faith; what does Jihad actually mean; and how has history played a role in what we see occurring today in the Muslim world?

Description: Church leaders inevitably face intense conflicts rooted in complicated relational, behavioral, familial and social dynamics. In this course we reflect on our vulnerabilities and discover the shape of responsible and faithful leadership. We investigate: how family systems understanding promotes non-anxiousness, developing self-awareness and self-understanding, current countercultural challenges in such conflicts, and spiritual resources for dealing with these challenges. We grow empowered as leaders and agents rather than victims.

LS504: Becoming the Disciple-Forming Community

Description: The old answers about what it means to be and do church don’t work any more. The new answers need yet to be discovered. Surprisingly one way to do this is through the recovery of the congregation’s traditional identity as a disciple-forming community. This seminar will explore what it means to be a disciple today, the role congregations can play in forming disciples and why playing that role is a key to personal and congregational vitality.
