“Already and Not Yet” – Robin Howard (’17)

Oftentimes in life’s journeys, we find ourselves in a state of befuddled quandary between our past accomplishments and future goals … Already, not yet. However, before we can move beyond our deluge of inadequacies of fear and doubt, to a place of purposefulness, we must look introspectively at our current station in life … Already, not yet. What have we already achieved that has made a difference in the grand scheme of life, and what are we hoping to accomplish to make a significant impact in our church, community, and world? How are we viewed by others – as a procrastinator stuck in the posture of past accomplishments (already) or the overachiever who incessantly believes that everything in life must be planned meticulously to be effective – thereby ultimately becoming the procrastinator that he/she may have loathed (not yet).

And yet, as we enter this season of Lent, we are called to a place of remembrance that informs us that we are right on the cusp of our desired excellence where we can find true joy filled with the sputtering of spiritual delight. But we must move out of the space of already and not yet, and move towards the open door. Helen Keller states it best when she says, “When one door of happiness closes, another one opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened.”

So, which door are you looking at?

Robin Howard graduated from Andover Newton in 2017 with a Masters in Theological Studies.
