“Chimes in the Wilderness of Fear” – Heidi Champagne

While I awaited my son’s birth in January 2000, fears of Y2K plagued me. You remember Y2K. It was a dreaded computer glitch that would make the year 2000 indistinguishable from the year 1900 and cause an international disturbance of records. As a result, I lamented my son’s impending birth into chaos. I waited in a hormone-fed balance of fear and hope.

Recently, that son turned 18. He was born into a world of chaos, yet he has grown to be a compassionate, intelligent young man. On his 18th birthday, I brought him to the hospital where he was born to send a gift to the first baby born on his birthday.

The volunteer in the gift shop giddily wrapped the items. She told us that the gift would have to wait because no baby had been born that day. Then, as we exited the gift shop, “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” chimed over the intercom. It was the hospital’s way of marking the birth of a baby.

The nurse at the main desk greeted us with a smile; the volunteer had called ahead. “Looks like you’re just in time. I’ll deliver this to the new baby and his mom.” My son beamed, and I wiped a tear from my eye as I gave thanks that another mother’s waiting had ended in the birth of promise, even as her child was born into today’s unrest.

As we enter the wild waiting of Lent, may we listen for unexpected chimes ringing out over the intercom of our fear.
