“The Vulnerability of Jesus" – Thomas Burke ('18)

We enter this season of waiting and anticipation with Luke 4: 1-13, where we find Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, retreating into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

We all find ourselves in the wilderness at times in our lives. Surrounded by the barren wasteland of mundane life, we look to temptation as a way to escape the ordinary. Our 9-5 lives lull us into complacency. But the season of Lent affords us an opportunity to deliberately confront these temptations and still find growth to sustain our spiritual, mental, and physical health.

It’s a challenge to recognize what new things exist in our lives. We enjoy routine and comfort.

In this Lenten season of anticipation, we are invited to take time to reflect on the comfort of life. We should not be afraid to be like Jesus and place ourselves in the uncomfortable wilderness. We can emulate this vulnerability Jesus exhibits – remembering that he flourishes in it.

We too can cultivate the environment that stimulates growth if we allow ourselves to be vulnerable in the face of life’s temptations.

Thomas Burke is an Andover Newton Seminary and Yale Divinity School student (MDiv ’18). He sits on the Andover Newton student steering committee, the “Founders;” he is President of the Yale Student Veterans Council, and Chair of the Ivy League Veterans Council. Thomas offered his senior sermon in Marquand Chapel this morning.
