Site Description

An ELCA congregation gathered from about a hundred households, The Lutheran Church of the Newtons is located in at the corner of Centre and Cypress Streets in Newton Centre, just down the hill from ANTS. We are a member community of the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, working with other Christians and people of other traditions for the wholeness and healing of the city. We are also a Reconciling in Christ Congregation, explicit in our insistence that the Gospel’s welcome is here for all regardless of race, class, or sexuality, and, while the majority of the membership still represents the ethnicity and demographics associated with the northern European roots of Lutheranism, an increasing number does not. Integral to our communal identity is our weekly gathering around Word and Sacrament, repeatedly re-centering our lives in worship, but we sustain our life with fellowship, bible study, education, and service activities as well.

Stipend Expectation

Student Involvement

There are five elements we usually identify in the field ed program:1) written theological reflection with discussion in sessions with the supervisor each week;2) exposure and experience in a wide breadth of parish ministry areas—worship leadership, preaching, teaching, informal conversation, etc;3) more focused attention to one or two ministry areas identified by the student and supervisor as worthy of particular address;4) evaluation, feedback, insight, and advice from the TPC;5) [optional] a special project chosen by the student for accomplishment by the end of the academic year.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Our parish has a long history of involvement with seminarian education , both in part-time field ed programs and, on occasion, full-time internships. The TPC and the congregation at large are both committed to this work with an appreciation for the good ministry, witness, and spirit that students have brought to our life here, but are also clear that the purpose of these placements is not primarily our own needs or desire for staffing but rather the contribution to the larger Church in the work of theological education and vocational discernment. We are proud and grateful to be able to provide a place for the preparation of men and women for future service to Christ's flock.
