Site Description

Myrtle Baptist Church was founded in 1874 by freed men and women some sons and daughters of slaves who settled in West Newton. The church has grown over the years from a neighborhood congregation to a regional house of worship that is primarily made up of African-Americans from many greater Boston communities. The church is a Christ centered, mission minded church that is vibrant in worship and spirit which is consistent with it's motto of being "The Church Where Love Abides". Myrtle has been affiliated with the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts for many years and is also a member of the United Baptist Convention of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. A family oriented church, Myrtle has an active Sunday School and other programs to accommodate the many children in the church.Along with its children's ministry we also have health, elders and educational ministries that include health screenings, monthly luncheons for our seniors and a science club for girls. We are blessed with a gifted music ministry that is made up of five choirs that provide inspiring music in all of our services. The choirs are accompanied by our "Myrtle Band" which is made up with organ, piano, saxophone drums and bass.Myrtle is active in the community and established the city wide celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday. It led the city in providing contributions to rebuilding of a church that was burned in Arkansas and providing truck loads of food to Katrina victims in Mississippi. Myrtle Baptist Church is a warm welcoming congregation that loves the Lord and demonstrates that by loving one another.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

Students will be given the opportunity to share learn and grow in every aspect the worship, mission and administerial elements of our church. Participating in worship by preaching and leading the service, attending board meetings, visiting the sick and shut-in and observing and sharing in funerals and weddings when appropriate. In working with the Teaching Parish Committee, the Supervisor and the Pastor the student will have the opportunity to develop a schedule of assignments and goals that will best benefit the student and the church. We will expect the student to get to know the church and it's people by fellowshiping with them in community activities with the chuldren, youth and adults.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

For years Myrtle has been a setting where students learn and grow in the Christian experience and prepare for ministry. Many of the students that have come here through field education have joined the church and stayed with us after graduation until they were called to another church. The congregation has always opened their homes to the students and provided a loving and supportive environment for them.

Special Considerations

The church is about a one mile walk from the MBTA's Green Line but there is no bus line that runs close to the church. Having one's own transportation will be convenient.
