Site Description

Mystic Congregational Church United Church of Christ is a vibrant and active congregation of nearly 500 members. Opportunities for ministry abound among our 50+ Sunday School children, our bustling nursery, our 30+ high school youth, our engaged parents, active retirees and our treasured population of octogenarians, nonagenarians and a few who have passed 100! Our staff includes our pastor, Director of Children’s Ministries, Director of Youth Ministries, Director of Music and a full-time administrative assistant, all of whom are engaged in ministry both within and without our walls and who welcome the opportunity to nurture the growth of a minister-in-training. Mystic, CT is a seaside town located in the easternmost part of the Connecticut shoreline. It is an important tourist destination with a strong and long history of boatbuilding and sailing. Mystic is home to the Mystic Seaport (“The Museum of America and the Sea”), the Mystic Aquarium, and the Mystic River Bascule Bridge and to a very active community-oriented Chamber of Commerce. Our church is located in Downtown Mystic within walking distance of the bridge, the Seaport and numerous shops, boutiques and restaurants. Mystic Congregational Church is an active member of the Mystic Area Ecumenical Council and maintains decades-old partnerships with City Church of New London (formerly the First Hispanic Baptist Church of New London) and Dongbu Sunlin Church in Hanam City, South Korea. The pastor currently serves as the President of the Mystic Area Ecumenical Council, serves on the board of the Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality (dedicated to ending family homelessness), and is active in our local New London Association and Connecticut state conference of the United Church of Christ.

Student Involvement

Our church’s mission is “to joyfully bring the Christian principles of faith, hope and love to all through quality worship, education, fellowship and outreach.” It is through the four prongs of our mission that we attempt to organize most of our ministry activities and it is within those four areas where a field education student would find the most opportunity. We offer two Sunday worship services as well as several special services throughout the liturgical year in which the introduction by a student of new and engaging ways to praise God are welcome. Our faith formation efforts include special Advent and Lenten studies for adults who are always seeking more opportunities for study. Our fellowship/fundraising events are fun and varied and well-attended and we are open to different ways, especially given the size of our congregation, to connect with each other more deeply as we journey together toward a closer walk with God. We engage in mission and outreach outside of our walls at many levels including an annual youth mission trip, the ongoing donation of food, blankets and clothing to local agencies, serving monthly meals at two shelters, financially supporting over 30 local agencies and hosting an annual “Mission Fair” every January. “Hands-on” mission has become a priority for us and we are always listening for new opportunities. A seminary intern at our church could join in the learning and leadership of any of these areas and more, bringing her/his own inspiration and ideas to help us further Christ’s mission in the world.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

The desire to become a teaching parish arrived with the pastor, an ANTS alum in 2008, who viewed her own past experience as a field ed student as both extremely valuable and something important to be shared. As pastor and parish embark on their seventh year of ministry together, both feel called to share all that Mystic Congregational Church has to offer with those who are discerning their own call to parish ministry. Because of our size and stability, we are able to offer numerous learning opportunities to a seminary intern and feel the presence of a student here will enliven us, challenge us, and nurture our spiritual growth as well as the student's. We are committed to walking with the student through this important aspect of theological education and providing learning opportunities which match the student's specific desires for ministerial growth.
