The on-again, off-again rains of May took a perfectly timed break for commencement week at Andover Newton Theological School, May 17-19.
Convocation events brought nearly 100 alumni/ae and their spouses and partners back to Newton Centre, where they heard a keynote speaker with Supreme Court testimony on his résumé and attended panels on the often tense relationship between church and state. They also awarded one of their own for a life’s service to others, both in the pulpit and as director of a care facility for church leaders in their later years.
The week ended with awarding of degrees to 70 students, some tears and laughter. The senior class heard from classmate Jenn Macy and a top leader in the United Church of Christ. Graduates planted “Class of 2012” balloons around campus, only the first of many ways these new alumni/ae will leave their mark on the school in years to come.
