Reverend Nick Carter, President of Andover Newton Theological School (ANTS), received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at Hebrew College’s 82nd commencement on June 3 in Newton, Mass.
Passionately committed to interfaith dialogue and to educating a new generation of moral and spiritual leaders, Carter has formed a close partnership with his counterpart, President David Gordis of Hebrew College. The two campuses are neighbors on Herrick Road, and both presidents have supported initiatives to cross borders between their religious traditions to train broad-minded thinkers who respect people of all faiths
Interfaith activities between ANTS and Hebrew College, supported by Carter and Gordis, have spawned Journeys on the Hill, a rich mixture of text study, ritual observance and social action led by students and faculty. The Interreligious Center on Public Life is a joint venture that provides a public policy forum for scholars, clergy and lay leaders of diverse traditions
An ordained American Baptist minister, Carter served as Pastor at the First Baptist Church in Beverly, Mass., for over a decade, leaving his successful parish in the late 1980s to become Executive Director of SANE/FREEZE, the largest grassroots peace and justice organization in America. In 1986, he was awarded the prestigious Dahlberg Peace award for his “prophetic voice and empowering leadership in the search for peace.”
Carter has focused on institutional transformation in non-profit and for-profit settings. In 1996, he became Vice President of Imagitas, a burgeoning $60 million marketing communications company dedicated to building innovative public/private partnerships. In 2001, he created Wayfinders Consulting, which offers strategic counsel to senior executives of religious and non-profit organizations.
Carter is married to Dr. Debbi Carter, also an ordained American Baptist minister, currently an interim pastor in Tewksbury and a national consultant on spirituality and aging.
