We have been busy on The Hill shoveling snow and preparing many wonderful events for you this Spring!

Soon after the ground thaws, Andover Newton's Honorary Walkway will be installed. The Walkway will be a new brick path between Dabney Hall (our main administration building) and Noyes Hall (our Student Lounge, bookstore and cafeteria).

The path will hold tributes in the form of engraved bricks commemorating graduates, pastors, professors, churches, students, trustees, alumni and loved ones.

If you'd like an honorary brick, please purchase one now, before March 26 and come visit on May 20th when we will dedicate the new path at Convocation. Once the walkway is installed, we will continue to offer bricks for engraving, but the price will go up. Blank bricks will have to be removed so that new engraved bricks can take their place.

Spring Convocation, Alumni Day and Commencement Weekend

Join your friends, fellow alumni, current students, faculty, staff and graduates in a three-day celebration on The Hill. Thursday is Alumni Day featuring our great faculty, notable speakers, lunch with the Presidents of Andover Newton and the UUA, and a Red Sox game, amongst other surprises.

Friday, come to our alumni-faculty-student and friends' lunch. Don't miss the Hang-Out Lounge before the Baccalaureate Service and the Night Owls Reception!

Saturday morning, families and friends of graduates are welcome to a drop-in Brunch and tours the campus before Commencement at 2 pm.

Over the years, many are introduced to Andover Newton through our Conference on Ministries. What a special time this is for participants, meeting others in the discernment process, seeing what it might be like to attend seminary, and listening carefully for the message that speaks directly to their call.

Would you please give some thought to those congregants, friends, co-workers, neighbors and relatives that you know as having gifts for ministry, theological reflection, leading, preaching, teaching, prophesying, praying, and pastoral calling?

Please tell them about Andover Newton and our Conference on Ministries March 19-20. Send them information about this event and encourage them to sign up. Or plan to attend together!

Join us for worship, conversations, and sample classes; meet our deans; and learn more about the application process. This is a great opportunity to meet folks from Andover Newton, experience the community, and find out about all the school has to offer.

Border Crossing Immersions open to Alums

"Listening to the Tales of Children's Lives in Appalachia" May 9-20, 2010

Border Crossing Immersions are a number of experiences/classes offered during the year to provide an opportunity to confront the challenges of a social context other than one's own, for the purpose of social analysis, theological reflection, deeper self knowledge and the development of multicultural sensitivity and skills. This experience/class seeks to deepen commitment to live one's faith through engaging with vital issues for the church and world with people beyond one's own social context.

This spring Professors Sharon Thornton and Brita Gill-Austern will be leading a border crossing immersion to Appalachia called "Listening to the Tales of Children's Lives in Appalachia" from May 9th to May 20th. This immersion will be in partnership with AMERC, Appalachia Ministry Educational Resource Center. The impact of poverty, substance abuse, substandard education, environmental degradation and malnutrition on the lives of children will be explored and how the church is reaching out to children in Appalachia.

The cost of this trip is $950 plus airfare. The application fee for all border-crossing immersions for alumnae is $300. Please call Jennifer Shaw at 617-964-1100 ext. 228 or Professor Gill-Austern at ext. 219 for an application and further information. Applications are due now!

Beyond the Walls of Our Congregations: Nick Carter and Bill Sinkford

Faculty Highlights

Prof. María Teresa Dávila

Andover Newton's assistant professor of Christian Ethics

Prof. María Teresa Dávila will give the Fifth Annual Lecture in Hispanic/Latino Theology and Missions. The Center for Hispanic Studies (CHS) at Concordia Seminary , St. Louis, has chosen Dr. María Teresa Dávila, Andover Newton assistant professor of Christian ethics, to be their guest speaker. The theme for this year's lecture is "Unión, Reunión y Comunión: Latino/a Religious Diversity and the Wager of Ecumenical Communion."

The annual lecture is designed to raise awareness about issues that affect Latino communities and to highlight the contributions of Latinos and others to the shape of the church's task in such contexts. The lecture will be held Thursday, March 18, at 7:00 p.m. in Concordia Seminary's Clara and Spencer Werner Auditorium in St. Louis.
