Site Description

Our Church:Mission Statement:We are a Christian community of many cultures, one faith!Unified in our diversity and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, We gather together in worship, witness and service,To glorify God and follow the example of Jesus, the Christ’s, inclusive love.FBCJP is a worshiping community of approximately 80 people in the midst of a redevelopment and renewal period in the congregation. A welcoming and affirming congregation, we are excited by growth and energy we are experiencing in our urban neighborhood. Jamaica Plain is situated approximately four miles from downtown Boston. It is a community of people made up of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Our church is a reflection of this rich diversity, including young and old, black, white, Hispanic and Asian cultures. We have historically met at the crossroads of the JP community. On January 18, 2005 our building suffered a devastating fire, but we have moved forward in hope, moving back into the first floor of our new building in January 2010. We gather for worship, programs of Christian formation, social justice and just plain fun.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

Opportunities for Ministry:A student serving at the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain will have the opportunity to: Co-lead worship weekly and preach once a month Teach a Sunday School class Make regular visits and phone calls to members, working with our congregational care team Participate in the process of congregational renewal, and of rebuilding and envisioning new ministries and programs for our community as we restore our building. We are more than willing to negotiate responsibilities based upon the students desires and skills; and we would welcome a student who has creative leadership abilities, vision, flexibility and an eagerness to learn how to minister in our context.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Our teaching parish committee is eager to work with a seminarian as they engage in the experience of field education. We feel that both the student and the church benefit from this particular relationship and are eager to continue being a training site for student pastors.
