Site Description

AN IMMERSION IN URBAN MINISTRY AND IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE COMMUNITIES (Field Education and Border Crossing Credit)This border crossing and field education experience will allow the student to both engage in ministry in a congregation (Christ Church United of Lowell, MA) that is culturally, economically and ethnically diverse within an urban setting, while also focusing 5 hours of one’s 20 hour commitment a week on learning about the needs of immigrant and refugee populations in Lowell and finding ways to address these needs through direct person to person contact and advocacy work. The Field Education Site, Christ Church United, description is below. Engagement with specific immigrant and refugee populations will happen through opportunities offered by the International Institute of Lowell, which might include such experiences as: work in refugee resettlement, helping with ESL classes, working with clients and city agencies in seeking employment, or support for families navigating a new school system. The International Institute will work with students to find the best match for a student’s gifts and interests and the needs of the population. Engagement with immigrant and refugee populations may also happen through participation in an immigrant church on Sunday afternoons or evenings and other times of the week. Each student in this border crossing will work out a covenant that will include learning goals for both the field education and border crossing component. The Rev. Dr. Peter Lovett will be the supervising pastor.

Student Involvement

FIELD EDUCATION SITE DESCRIPTION, Christ Church United, United Church of ChristChrist Church United (CCU) in Lowell is an Open and Affirming congregation of approximately 100 culturally, economically, ethnically diverse members, located downtown. Weekly attendance in worship averages 60; our church school average is 20. Though small in number, there is no shortage of spirit in worship! Two additional worshipping congregations - Iglesia Hispana de la Communidad, UCC and Lao, UCC – make our community a very unique. Though we are small, we are active in many community and faith-based organizations. CCU’s doors are open to the homeless all day on Wednesdays, as we seek to address the painful realities and injustices relating to homelessness, addiction. We are proud of our ongoing effort to address the dire need for affordable housing. As a site for Field Education, we offer opportunities for involvement in a variety of ministries; teaching, elder care, small groups (Bible & book studies) and worship (planning, leading & preaching) or youth ministry. We sing songs from all parts of the globe, and welcome the artist/musician wishing to join our enlivening worship project. We seek students with particular interest in helping grow our efforts to be a multicultural church in the world.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Christ Church United has a history as a "teaching parish" for decades. There is an appreciation for the role the church plays in training future clergy.
