Site Description

Site Description:We are a downtown, inner city (small city) northeast of Boston. Our pastor, The Reverend Mary F. Bettencourt (ANTS '01), was called as our Interim Covenant Pastor in 2002 with the option for us to call her as our Pastor following our participation in ABCUSA's Rekindle! Program. We have two other part-time staff members, an Organist/Choir Director and Sexton. A member of our congregation serves as our Volunteer Secretary. We called Rev. Bettencourt as our settled Pastor in June of 2005. During the past five years our congregation has grown from 22 individuals to over 80 family units, almost 300% growth. We are now a multi-cultural church with a strong Euro American presence and history with ties to The American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts and The Adoniram Judson Baptist Association. Peoples' ethnicities/nationalities represented in our congregation include Euro American, Haitian, Dominican Republic, Ugandan, and Hispanic. Services are conducted in English with occasional use of French and Spanish. We also have a predominantly African American ABC sister church in the city, St. John's Baptist Church.Ministries include:Deacon's Shepherding ProgramActive Evangelism & Outreach EventsPastoral Visitation & Crisis MinistryANTS Field Education Supervisor (offsite 2006-2007, 2007-2008)Junior Church Program (at present: ages 1-8)Chancel ChoirJunior Youth Class (at present: ages 11-14)Adult Bible StudyNew Folks Classes/Discipleship Classes (as needed)Thrift Store Ministry (Clothing & Household Goods)Woburn Council of Social Concerns Supporter Dwelling Place Ministry Supporter (Supper Program within the city)Annual Church FairAmerican Baptist Women's Ministries, Local ChapterWomen's & Men's Ministries (Rebekah Circle)Church Suppers, Italian Night, etc.Mission of Deeds Supporter (household furniture for the poor)Woburn Clergy Association participantShare space with:Alcoholics Anonymous (2 groups)Narcotics Anonymous (Women's Serenity Group)Mishawum Choral Society (community choir)A.R.T. Commitment to Educating Ministers

Description of the Teaching Parish/Site's commitment to the mission of educating ministers: FBC Woburn desires to again be a Field Education site for seminarians who desire to experience congregational life in an American Baptist Church Having experienced a declining period in our church and the new growth within the last five years, we see the need to assist in the development of students who feel called to professional Christian ministry, especially those who are planning to proceed to ordination in the ABCUSA. The Teaching Parish Committee will assist the student in the development of a Learning Agreement in consultation with the pastor, staff and other church leaders. The Teaching Parish Committee sees itself as a provider of feedback, a provider of affirmation of gifts, and a provider of resources for a student minister. The TPC will provide ongoing support for a student minister by meeting regularly. The TPC will participate in helping the student minister reflect on their ministry. The TPC will take responsibility to welcome the student, work with the student, and facilitate the ending of Field Education. The TPC will write and file on time all necessary evaluation and signature forms. The TPC will coordinate its ministry with Andover Newton's Field Education Director and with the student's supervisor.
