Site Description

Central Congregational Church was formed in 1909 as the merger of three Newburyport congregations, an event that required a strong sense of grace and hospitality among the members of the diverse congregations. That sense of hospitality and welcome remains with us today, as do other characteristics that were evident at the time of the merger. Back in 1909, an observer noted that "It is plain that the members of these churches have been interested in certain definite things. The missionary interest has long been in evidence…Central Church believes in Religious Education…Central Church believes that a singing congregation will probably be a worshipping congregation, and therefore promotes choral and congregational music under excellent leadership. Central Church believes in applied Christianity and strives to develop a Christian spirit in its members, toward one another, toward their community, and toward the world."These “definite interests” remain evident today in the life of the congregation. The congregation values excellence in worship and preaching with an average attendance of 150-160. An active Sunday school program provides religious education to more than 60 children and recently reorganized youth group gathers Middle and High school students for fellowship and service. Christian Outreach is an important focus of the congregation, including delivering meals each month to low-income families, offering birthday and Christmas gifts to local children, support for the community food pantry, providing ongoing support for local nonprofit organizations and responding to ongoing community needs. Central Church has also held special events such as a U2 Eucharist to raise awareness and funds for the Millennium Development Goals and a fundraiser for earthquake relief in Chile. A growing peace education program called “Kids as Peacemakers” got its start at Central more than ten years ago and continues to reach young people in Greater Newburyport and beyond. Newburyport is a picturesque coastal New England town located 40 miles north of Boston with a strong sense of civic engagement. Today, the city is a mix of longtime residents who have lived here for generations and young professionals who were attracted by the city’s cultural activities, beaches, and many outdoor activities. Both groups are well-represented at Central Church. Newburyport is known as a beautiful tourist destination, yet pockets of poverty exist within the city. Nearby communities are marked by significant poverty and many of the Church’s outreach efforts seek to address these concerns.

Stipend Expectation

This site meets the stipend expectation

Student Involvement

The congregation provides many opportunities for leadership development including preaching regularly, leading informal family worship, working with Kids As Peacemakers, leading adult education discussions, working with children and youth, participating in pastoral visits, serving with church committees, and working with youth. The congregation shows a great deal of flexibility in responding to the gifts of its leaders.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Central Church has supported many field education students in recent years. Many of our former interns now serve UCC churches in the Massachusetts Conference. The congregation and its lay leaders take seriously the responsibility of supporting and training the next generation of pastors for our churches.

Special Considerations

Newburyport is on the commuter rail line, but the church is not easily accessible by public transportation.
