Site Description

Gathered as a congregation in 1743, Beneficent Church has been engaged in active outreach to the wider community for over two and a half centuries. We have a long history of social justice within Providence and beyond. From American independence to the antislavery movement, racial justice, and care for the poor, Beneficent has always been an activist church, responding to social needs. That tradition continues today as we extend God’s extravagant welcome to all. Whatever your age, culture, economic status, gender and gender expression, language, nationality, physical or mental ability, race or sexual orientation, and wherever you are on life’s journey, you are most welcome here. Beneficent Church is an Open and Affirming congregation. Our Meeting House and fellowship rooms are fully accessible. Since 2009, Beneficent has been in the process of redevelopment and renewal as we seek to be a relevant witness for our 21st Century urban community. Today we are a rapidly growing multicultural congregation with a vibrant youth and Sunday School program. Worship reflects our multicultural community with an eclectic mix of traditional hymns, gospel, and international sacred music. Over 50% of our congregation are people of color from many different ethnic backgrounds, including African American, Native American, Latino, and Asian American. We are in the midst of Johnson and Wales University campus and are beginning a campus outreach program.

Stipend Expectation

Student Involvement

As a growing church that is not afraid to try new things, a student pastor has a wide variety of choices to get involved at Beneficent. He or she can join with an existing ministry or start something new. Currently, our student pastor works with youth and college students, spear-heads the OWL (Our Whole Lives faith-based sex ed program), preaches, and leads worship regularly. We also have opportunities for social justice, including homeless programs, food pantry, and affordable housing programs. Our music program finds strength in its community partnerships with the RPM Gospel Choir, weekly youth drumming program, and worship band.

Commitment to Educating Ministers

Beneficent has been a Teaching Parish for two academic cycles and truly has embraced its mission to educate ministers. The co-pastors both feel a special calling to educate the next generation of pastors, particularly in the area of church turnaround ministry and multicultural churches. The congregation is very welcoming to students, especially since Providence is a university city. Beneficent founded the first public school in the state and has had a historical commitment to education from the beginning. Beneficent has supported the scholarship programs of several seminaries over the years and is happy to have a more personal connection to students through the Field Education Program.

Special Considerations

Beneficent is in the process of starting a campus outreach program located in an historic house across the street from the church. It is possible that we may be able to offer housing to a student, either full-time or part-time (overnight) next year. Providence is connected to Boston and New Haven through the commuter rail service. Rev. Nicole Grant Yonkman, co-pastor, is a certified Teaching Pastor through ANTS.
